IE7 Won't display any webpages
      #391127 - Fri Apr 11 2008 06:59 AM

I can use the internet fine on Firefox, but for some reason IE7 won't display any webpages. It takes ages to load up and not matter what page I type in, it won't find it. It just started happening yesterday.

Then when I close IE, I always get the message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem".

Does anyone have any idea why this would happen?

Thanks in advance.

Could be an incompatible or corrupt add on that's at fault. You could start by going to start > all programs > accessories > system tools. Click on the Internet Explorer ( no add ons ) option and browse the net in this mode. If it works ok there's a problem with an add on , activex for example.

Did you change anything , installed a program or a toolbar , something like that.

Thanks for your reply.

It's still the same with Internet Explorer (no add ons), the only difference is, I don't get the error message when I close it.

I had a look at the system restore to see what had been done in the last few days. It seems to have happened since some Windows updates came through on Weds. I have restored back to before this time and it's ok now and working.

Update:- I installed the updates again and IE wouldn't work again. So I restored it back to before I did it and it works. I have checked for updates now and the only one to install is Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

I checked my update history and when I originally installed them on Weds, one of them failed which was Security Update for Windows XP (KB945553).

there was also one called Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB948881)

Does anyone know what this one is for?

It seems that the problem was caused by "cumulative security update for internet explorer 7 for windows XP (KB947864). I have removed it and everything is fine.

My default browser if Firefox, but I still need to use IE for certain things, otherwise I would have left it.

I've been trying to fix this issue since last month, still haven't done it. Firefox works for me too so I'll try to remove that update and see what happens. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
