Hi All
I have been running the subject router and AOL for about 6 months with no snags. However I recently upgraded the router firmware and AOL, after which I cannot now log into the internet through AOL (I stop at step 2 with the following message: "[Broadband] The computer could not get an internet connection. (Error: AC-3000 0x84100116)".
I can log in through Internet Explorer and through AOL when I plug my old Broadband Modem in.
AOL aren't interested, I have tried the things on their help pages. Netgear seem to think I should lower the MTU settings in 12 point steps to 1200, which I have done to no avail. Before I phone Netgear back and spend another £?? can anyone offer me any advice please?
Cheers
Daz

Hindsight, eh?
Did as you suggested, however now on attempting to start AOL it is continually looking for a dial up connection and asks me to plug a phone line into my modem. Two steps back........
I guess AOL isn't recognising the router and vice versa.

This just hit me today with a Netgear DG834PN router running firmware V1.03.36. Networking is functional for everything else just not AOL 9.0

From what I've read about AOL the major fix seems to be reducing the MTU to 1400 on any router you happen to use.

MTU is at 1400 -- the AOL phone-monkey said they're in the middle of a systems migration.
AHA!
I think the problem is that the aol proxy services are to blame.
The reachability of "AmericOnline.aol.com:5190" UDP/TCP is suspect.

Found it!
Firmware dg834pn_1_03_36 is the culprit. I downgraded to dg834pn_1_03_35 and it started working again.

Bugger, it seems that I cannot even get to the Netgear router settings page now (192.168.0.1). It keeps recycling! I will keep trying and revert back to the previously working firmware. I will keep you updated after pressing the reset button on the router!

I took the advice and reverted to the previous Netgear firmware. Lo and behold, everything is working again!
Cheers all.

Hi,
Just to let you know I also had the same problem with my Netgear 834pn, Firmware v1.03.36 and AOL9.
The symptons were exactly as you describe, and like you I (eventually) reverted to v1.03.35. Although that was after going through several pointless exercises like repairing AOL's adaptor, re-installing AOL, opening up ports 5190-5193 and even setting the router back to factory defaults! Then it suddenly dawned on me that my other half's PC and my work laptop also had the same symptons with AOL, so the only thing that had changed was the router firmware! So going back to v1.03.35 did the trick.
Just for your information I have logged this as a fault on Netgears Support page about a week ago, and after about six email exchanges, they seem to have finally agreed there's a problem with v1.03.36 and AOL 9
Here's their latest reply: 3/9/2008 9:54:00 PM From AGENT ID: 1047
Dear David,
My name is xxxxxxx and I am following up on your support case.
Based on the complexity of this case, it may be appropriate for me to seek additional resources. I recommend escalating your case to the next level for further review and response and they will get back shortly. This message is for your information only. There is no additional action needed from you at this time. The next level agent will update the case and you will be notified.
Again, thanks for choosing NETGEAR. We appreciate your continued patience. We will be working hard to get back to you shortly.
Regards,

I'll keep you posted, but may be if you also log a call with Netgear, it will spur them on. Here's their link where you can register, but also log a fault and check on it's progress.
Cheers :-) David
