My local exchange is being B.B. enabled next month, on checking on the BT website I was advised that ' because of the distance to the exchange and length of cable an engineer would have to call to do make the connection'. Is this really necessary or just a ploy by BT to get more custom?

Yes it really is neccessary. They will have done electronic tests on the line that indicate that there may well be a problem. You won't have to pay any more money for this service.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Thanks for that guys, I was thinking that BT were trying to pull you into a deal with them, so if I just let them know I'm going for Broadband they just check the line no strings ?

You don't need to tell BT that you want broadband unless you want them to be your ISP. Whoever you choose to be your ISP will have to ask BT to confirm that your line is suitable. The ISP will then advise you of the next step. The problem is that some of the cheaper ISPs may well just say 'Sorry, can't be done'. Choose your ISP, ask the question, and see what happens.

BT enabled my (Rural West Wales)exchange 18 May. I connected 26 May using self install (3 or 4 miles from ex.) if it is a very rural ex. BT will have to install.

The key to having working BB is effective distance from the exchange. Effective isn't just the physical distance, it takes account of other factors e.g. quality of cabling etc.
In most cases a simple remote test can confirm whether or not BB can be provided. In cases where the signal is marginal BT will have to do an on-site test to be sure. Doesn't matter which ISP you select since BT will do the BB install (either home & exchange or just exchange).
