I am writing this on behalf of a friend who currently is having problems accessing the net. Hence the reason for the post. He recently got a Blueyonder Broadband connection, which in itself was problematic, but finally got it up and running about amonth ago. Yesterday he bought a new 3Ghz Medion PC with XP Home Edition installed. He went through the normal Set up and logged onto the Blueyonder Home page with no problem, but as soon as he went to the MSN Messenger site, the PC crashed to a Blue Screen and had to be rebooted, he has tried a number of web sites some are fine, but others cause the same Crash, but with varying codes and comments. He is using a Motorola Surfboard SB4100 with USB 2.0 connection. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I assume your friend bought the PC from Aldi. He shouldn't even be even thinking about trying to fix it. A blue screen crash on a brand new PC is unacceptable. Take it back to Aldi and tell them you want one that works.

Dave, Blue screens on XP are rare, and the vast majority of them are caused by driver issues, and of those they are usually graphics driver problems. Try rebooting to Safe mode, and re-installing the drivers, though it certainly may be worth installing the modem drivers again as well.
I do agree though that this should be up to the supplier to give a solution
I shall be moving this to the general PC-related forum on your reply

In answer to greysts, yes it was the Aldi Special, but he managed to email me the message and stop codes that he has been receiving, and I have since found the exact same problem on two other forum sites, one on a DELL. And from what I can make out the problem relates primarily to USB connected Hard Disks there is a Microsoft Knowledge Base article no. 331988 indicating that it is a problem with the Microsoft Products. For anyone who might have the same poblem the messages are either BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER STOP: 0X000000FE (0X00000002,0X814E16D8,0X8153A008,0X81627518)
or BAD_POOL_CALLER STOP: 0X000000c2 (0X00000007,0X00000CD4,0X020A0001,0X814B9FB8)
The Knowledge Base article says that there is a fix for it but you have to contact Microsoft Support, I'm waiting to hear back.

That is interesting. I had no idea they were providing a USB HD. I wouldn't have thought even USB2 would be fast enough for data transfer between CPU and HD but they clearly think it is. If it hasn't got a ribbon connector how do you go about installing another HD?

We are certainly looking at USB device drivers, and I would be tempted to open a book on the ADSL Modem drivers as odds on and also the Motherboard drivers for USB 2.0 evens try removing these drivers in safe mode. unplug the modem and get windows to re-install the USB2 controller.
Restart if no problems then, we can look at the modem drivers. Make sure that ALL Modem software is uninstalled too

I have no idea I'm still coming to terms with SCSI. All I know is what it outlines in the Knowledge Base
'When a Computer that is running Windows XP is accessing USB 2.0 hard disks under heavy stress conditions, you may receive a bugcheck 0xFE message similar to the following: BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER'
The only other thing I would say is that from some of the other postings I have skimmed through it seems more common with Intel than AMD processors.

As your friend is using a USB2.0 Modem and the HD is also USB2.0, is that what Microsoft term as 'working under stress conditions'? Is it possible to plug the modem into the ethernet port of the PC (assuming the modem has both types of connection) in order to reduce the load? Having said that the Medion has got 7 USB2.0 ports and it ain't gonna be a lot of use if you can only use one of them!

I would totally agree, it seems that XP has not kept pace with the Hardware, perhaps that is why according to Microsoft there is a fix.
