Orange Download Speeds
      #391754 - Wed Apr 16 2008 07:31 PM

Xp Pro SP2 OE7 Orange BB £17.99
I've been experiencing very slow speeds which are noticeable mostly late afternoons and early evenings. Using ThinkBroadband to log the speeds when it's good it averages 1.8Meg this is pretty constant during the morning. But the lows can be so bad as to be unmeasurable.
Contacting Orange just leads to a merry go round of the same questions.
What I would like to know is this.
Firstly, am I right in thinking that if I am getting the best speeds what Orange say my line is capable of ie 2Meg in the mornings my sockets and wiring at my end are OK and the problem is Oranges inability to cope with demand later in the day.
Secondly, if i change ISP,s would I still have slow speeds in the second part of the day.
Regards,
Try.

Still experiencing slow PM speeds the test just carried out (5PM) came in at just 191.55Kbps.
Anyone care to answer the wiring query?
Regards,
Try.

If your t/p line is only able to handle a max of 2mb, changing ISP's will have absolutely no effect as they will all be using the same telephone wire. Your surfing speed is not just down to Orange - it is affected by the contention ration i.e how many other people are on line at the same time as you. It is also affected by the number of people on line world wide. You might get something better from another ISP but then again you might not.

Thanks for reply.
Sorry for the delay in replying.
In some of the conversations with Orange they question my phone sockets etc.
Any thoughts on the sockets and wiring at my end, which are perfectly adequate and are OK for surfing in the mornings.
Do you think like me that if they deliver my maximum download (nearly 2Meg) part of the day that they are OK?
Regards,
Try.

If you are getting the maximum download speed of which your t/p line is capable (2mb) at least at some time of the day then there is nothing wrong with your wiring. You are simply experiencing a common problem - the internet gets over crowded at certain times. You might get a better service from another ISP but it's very much of a gamble.

Thanks greysts,
Thats put my mind at rest.
I thought there couldn't be anything wrong but Orange kept on harping on about the computer not being plugged into the 1st main BT box.
Regards,
Try.
