Hi folks,
I am a newbie in here so don't know if this topic has been spoken about already. I am with Virgin Media Broadband 20mb. Lately they have started downgrading you if you have downloaded 4/5 gb. So if you were to download a movie which is that size you get downgraded to 3/4mb. Anybody else having the same problem.
I contacted them and they say you get put down to the lower download speed for 5 or 6 hours when you have downloaded that much. Just think its a bit much when you are paying for 20mb.

I'm a Virgin Media customer too and as far as I understand it, if you download large files i.e. a film during peak periods, then as your internet use affects other virgin customers in the area, your speed should be reduced to enable others to do 'ordinary things' such as browse, send/receive email online gaming etc.
I get hit by the download restriction on occasion, normally when I'm downloading windows updates, followed by all the files needed to update World of Warcraft etc after wiping my pc.
I fully understand and accept that my activity is affecting others and I fully accept that as my activity is affecting others, that my speed should be reduced to allow fair speeds for everyone else, then again, that's just me.

Hi Ray,
Thanks for replying. Yes I understand what your saying it doesn't really affect me either as I am disabled after an accident at work so I can browse and download at any time. It is the people who are at work and can only download at that time and if they download their limit in first couple of hours then they will have to wait until the following day to get back up to speed.
But surely if you are paying the larger amount for the 20gb you would think they should supply the speed. As I said it doesn't bother me as I change my time's to download things.

You are experiencing what every downloader gets hit with - a fair use policy. All ISP's are applying such policies because the vast majority of their customers have been complaining about the minority who are causing bottlenecks in the system with excessive downloads. As 80% of all downloads are actually by people sharing stolen music and films, I for one am more than happy that my ISP (Virgin) are penalising those few who are causing my own speeds to be affected. Clearly if you are paying the going rate for your own downloads you have a right to expect a good service but VM will only usually start applying their fair-use policy after excessive downloads. Does that apply to you?

lol what a dreamer, you obviously don't know how to use your connection to its potential then. i see you are happy that virgin media are penalising people who download over 5 gig a week on their " unlimited " broadband, their fair usage isn't fair usage. should be called virgin media's how to rob people policy. everyone on virgin media pays good money for their services and not many receive that. virgin media ADSL will never supply a good connection. average broadband companies in the country are nowhere near their claimed speed, because the government won't upgrade the services. France have now just got 100mb connection and U.K is struggling to get over 20mb. lol so much for this country.

Hi pal, some advice just ditch virgin media, go for a better ISP. virgin media will always cap you. They should understand you are on a 20mb connection and you can download 5 gig in a couple of hrs for fun. 5 gig is just a joke of a limit on a 20mb connection but they don't understand, all they want is your hard earned money for a rubbish service. so just move on pal.

LOL, what a clown. Whilst I sort of agree with what you say about capping usage, check the facts before you post childish comments. Most Virgin Media broadband is supplied over cable, so they can reach their advertised speeds. They don't use ADSL unless they don't have their lines in that particular area. ha, ha, etc Lol blah blah blah.

I've been wanting to bring up this subject for a while. It really ****es me off. If I only wanted to browse the web I would pay for the slowest speed (which some bright spark at Virgin thinks is called medium!). But I pay chose to pay a bit more to speed up downloading larger files. And what do they do? Slow me down. Their argument is that I slow down others down by hogging the bandwith. But if they slow me down I hog it for 5 times longer. Surely it's better to let me download my big file as quickly as possible and then clear off!
Now here's the science bit...
3 lanes on a motorway.
Traffic in all 3 is doing 70mph.
If you close 2 lanes for 1 mile, in order for all of the traffic to pass through the 1 mile stretch in the same time it would have to do 210mph.
You have to SPEED UP traffic to keep it flowing. NOT slow it down. Am I making sense?
And more thing. I've been upgraded to 10Mbps this week but I have never known web pages to load so slowly. 30-60 seconds or more. Most of the time, not at all.
Sick to death.
