Dual Internet Access
      #390445 - Fri Apr 04 2008 11:53 PM

I'm not sure if this should be in the Dial-Up forum but here goes:

I currently have a broadband account but have recently been experiencing a fair bit of downtown created by ISP (VirginMedia) problems. When their service is up and running it is good. I am reluctant to go with another provider because all of my services are through Virgin and most suppliers carry broadband through a BT line.

Anyhow..to the point. I have a desktop pc running XP and a laptop on Vista Home Premium. The laptop connects wirelessly to the router wired to my desktop. When my broadband service is 'down' I would like to be able to use a dial-up connetion on my Vista laptop which does have an modem installed. I dont have a dial-up account but I suppose there a plenty companies still offering them.

So is this possible to do i.e switch to a dial up connection on my laptop only when the broadband is 'down'. It sounds too easy and that is what concerns me. Is there anything I should be aware of?

Many thanks

Yes you can do this, the only thing I can think that you should be aware of, is signing a contract for Dial up, you'd be better getting a PAYG dial up account.

Also get Virgin to find out what the issue is, with your current connection

Thanks Mouse. I agree that a PAYG dial-up account would be the way forward. As for asking Virgin what the problem is....well, contacting Virgin for information is like pulling teeth. If you ever look at their service status page, you will never see a 'reason' listed. All they do is apologise and promise to resume service asap. We had an email outage a few weeks ago that lasted for 8 days. Every 4 hours they update customers via their website as to the repair time, but all that happens is the same message is pasted over and over again. A bit repetetive after eight days!! Phoning them is useless as nobody knows whats going on!!.

Sorry about my little rant...but I do feel better now

Thanks for your help anyhow Mouse
