Hi all
I've just got started with this plan from Orange that gives me 6GB of monthly download allowance.
Before, for ages, i was on dial-up & didn't use sites like You Tube & listen to live radio, download the odd music clip or watch streaming videos, but i've recently taken advantage of these sites & am concerned that i may be exceeding my monthly 6GB allowance.
I don't download movies, only watch the things on You Tube, some up to 20 mins long. I work from home & am on pc 6-8 hours a day for leisure too.
I know that i'm using allowance all the time as just being online is bandwidth use, but just concerned about over using 6GB.
Can someone give me an example of what i'd need to be doing each day to use 6GB a month.
Also, if on standbye, am i still using my allowance as theoreticaly, aren't i still online, although i turn my modem off each time i shutdown.

If you are on line and just watching videos from YouTube etc, you are not downloading anything. This is just streaming the videos for you.
It makes no difference how long you are on and doesn't use any of your 6GB allowance and that includes when its on standby.
You only use any of your 6GB when you actually download anything to your computer from a site.

Sorry but that isn't right. Whilst you are surfing the net your PC is constantly downloading and uploading data. The simple act of opening a web page sends data from that page to your PC. When you first switch on your PC it is transmitting data to your ISP and they are responding. That all counts against your 6gb limit.
How do you think the data from YouTube gets to your PC? A streaming video is data that is sent to your PC so you can view it. It is also a considerable amount of data and will quite soon bite into your allowance.

I have a mate that says streaming is the same as downloading! as he had a 6GB allowance & his ISP called him & said he's used 10GB & he found that his daughter had been watching stuff on You Tube. I'm a bit confused!
Am i using MB'S, whilst my router is turned on? as theoreticaly, i'm online when all the lights are lit!!

And he's right, it's exactly the same in total bytes used. The only difference between streaming and downloading is that with the first you are watching the film at the same time as the data is being downloaded to your PC. With the second you wait for it to download and then watch it. Streaming downloads the file to a temporary location and then should delete it when you've finished watching. A proper download leaves the file on your PC to watch as many times as you like. Quote:

Not unless the PC is also turned on and connected to the net. There may be a very,very small amount of use by the modem when your ISP sends a request to the router to make sure it's still there but that's not worth worrying about.

I mean, when my pc is on stand by, or when i'm not using the pc & the router is connected & the pc is on, showing desktop, but i'm not actively doing anything!
He told me that i'd probably be able to use 200MB a day with a 6GB allowance!, i'm sure 4 or 5 x 5 min video clips a day, plus surfing, email etc, isn't going to be that much!?, i hope & think

And he's right again! But then again maths aren't that difficult - 30 days times 200mb equals 6gb. To put that in perspective a 60 minute video using the BBCi Player is around 600mb so you could watch 20 minutes a day of streaming video.

I guess it changes daily, i watch about 10-15 mins of You Tube daily, my pc is on for around 6 hrs, surfing, emails etc! I'm not sure my exact usage. When i signed up, there was nothing saying .beware of your download quantity' & Orange said 'get downloading' on the letter! Also on the Orange Website, it says they don't mind the odd overspil, but i wonder how much that overspill could be!!
Whilst on standye & router on, is it connected to internet?

But when router off, it's not connected, so whenever i leave my pc on stand bye, it's best to turn off router, as i'm wasting MB'??

Jeez, i've downloaded this & i haven't a clue how it works, i just keep getting loys of the icon in my taskbar!!.
It doesn't seem to tell me in MB's or GB's what i've used today or what i'm using now!!

You can estimate your usage if you know roughly what you do with your connection, for example:
Downloading a piece of music (a single 4-minute track, known as an MP3 file) could be expected to use about 4 MB.
A 5 minute single streamed broadband music or movie video is around 13MB.
Watching a streamed broadband video for one hour is around 150MB/hour
Listening to one hour of online radio is around 18MB/hour.
Playing an online game like Counterstrike is around 10-12MB/hour
Email is generally very small, 300 emails use around 2MB, but if you add spam and emails with virus attachments this can rise to say 6MB for 300 emails.
Receiving or sending still pictures might be expected to use anywhere between 0.05 and 0.25 MB per picture
Receiving or sending relatively short word processing documents and reading largely text-based Internet pages (browsing) would commonly use approximately 0.02 to 0.05 MB per activity.
Web browsing averages out at around 10MB/hour (Megabytes per hour

Why estimate use net meter set it to your allowance (upload & download) and when your month starts then you will be notified when or if you are going to exceed your limit.
If you have more than 1 PC then install it on all but you will have to check what has been used on each PC and then work out the amounts yourself
I can easily use 750Mb a day surfing and listening to on-line radio but that would be nearly 14 hours on-line
