To start off with, I have to say I know NOTHING about this sort of stuff, hense the need for this topic.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/237553067.png
Is that any good or what? I am supposed to be getting some sort of upgrade on our service some time soon so if it goes faster then that would be good for downloading all the..... stuff I download.
Also, If I watch videos online on say, Youtube or something, and my internet speed is higher, will they buffer faster? I mean the video loads faster, because if I don't let it load then it tends to lag quite alot, so it would be better if it loaded faster obviously so I could watch it sooner after opening it.
Thanks.

To answer your first question, is your speed any good - no, it's pretty awful. 479kbs download is just under half a meg and that's only just within the range that could be described as broadband.
What sort of upgrade are you getting? I see you are with AOL - what have they told you?
Yes, videos on line will load that much faster and won't need so much buffering.

Oh, ok..... I thought it was pretty fast :-S It's been that way for years as far as I know.
We are being upgraded to AOL silver they said, whatever that means. They were supposed to upgrade us before and it never happened so... *shrug* no idea if it actually will happen you know.
I am of the sort of mind that 'if stuff works and I don't have to deal with it, just leave it, i'm not bothered HOW it works' so I am not really interested in switching ISP if I don't have to, plus it's not my house or phone-line so it wouldn't be me making the decision anyway.

So do you want to do anything about the download speed or not?

Well, i'd like it to be better of course, but I doubt I personally could do anything about it ability wise, money wise and control of the internet wise. As I have little of any of them.

In that case I'm not quite sure why you bothered to ask the question in the first place.

Wow..... ok, is there really any need to be so rude about it? You are the reason people hate help forums. Just because you know more and have more power around here as a 'higher up' member, it doesn't mean you can treat people who don't know as much about the subject as you like a peace of crap.
I wanted to know if the speed was any good and I mentioned an upgrade that I am supposed to be getting from AOL (so I am told), that was it.
Next time I won't botheer then and just keep my problems to myself if I am going to get that sort of reaction just for stating facts.

AOL sent us a letter that said *checks* 7 to 10 working days, which was last Wednesday I think, so on looking at it it seems it never happened, how odd :-S
I think this happened a time before too, this is the only trouble we have ever had with AOL though, not as bad as our last provider (wannado) who cut off our internet with no warning then said we would get an email about it.... yeah, with no internet, again showing how wierd some companies can be.

Ok thanks Wildthing.
It says: 'We've just tested your line and can confirm your line supports the UK's most complete broadband package, BT Total Broadband and we can confirm that you will be able to reach a maximum download speed of 2.5 (Megabits per second).
Download speeds are dependent on a number of factors such as the distance between your telephone exchange to your house or how many people are using broadband at the same time. BT Total Broadband will always give you the maximum download speed available to your line based on these factors.'
So it indeed seems i've been cheated out of alot of speed for quite a while.
