Hi there,
Been using Tiscali (for my sins) for the past 6/7 years.
I have always had a direct debit / standing order with them and it is all present and correct with my bank.
However yesterday, I received a letter from Tiscali, advising that I owed them £254 approx and that they had no payment details for me setup!
It appears that Tiscali for whatever reason at there end, had stopped taking the money from my account for the past year!
Now, they have given me 14 days to pay this amount or I lose my service which is not fair.
I have spoken to Tiscali many times in the past year and not once have they ever queried or mentioned anything to do with payment and not being one to study my statements just assumed that the direct debit / standing order which had always been fine, was being taken by Tiscali (afterall they request the money from the bank).
I don't have an issue with paying them, but having to fork out £254 odd quid at this time of the year is just crazy and unrealistic for me currently.
Is there anything I can do?

I understand why it's hard at this time of the year, but did you not notice that the amount had never left your account after all this time?
You owe the money, as you've used the service and had it free for "x" amount of months, the only thing I can suggest is you speak to them, find out as to why they've only just began chasing for the payment, however agree that you owe the money, but due to the time of the year you cannot pay it out in one full amount.
Tell them that you can offer them extra payments per month on top of the normal monthly charge until it has been paid, ask them to come up with an affordable agreement, even if it's short term, until at least Xmas is out of the way, then settle the balance earlier if you can.

I bank online and via telephone and basically have always assumed it was taken, as I don't have this problem with anyone else or with Tiscali before.
Bloody annoying, how can they not even realise themselves way earlier, clearly they have no idea about running a business.
I know that they have done this to others as well.

Sorry but although Tiscali have failed to take the money it doesn't absolve you from the responsibility of checking your bank account on a regular basis. What would have happened if they had taken twice as much each month? Wouldn't you have noticed that either? How do you know you've not had this problem with any other company? Have you checked? With on line fraud as bad as it is you just cannot expect everything to be fine until someone tells you different.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

No offence, but I am inclined to agree with the other replies. I bank online and check my account regularly. I know exactly what DD's go out and what dates they go out. If one wasn't taken for whatever reason, then I would have noticed and queried it.
