Broadband Speed
      #360953 - Sat Aug 11 2007 11:06 AM

Sorry to keep on harping about this, but I still seem to be getting low download speeds, even though the various speed test sites tell me that my download should be 3, 4 and this morning from the www.numion (see the Virgin Broadband thread) site - 7Mb/s. Yet when I come to download an actual file I usually get less than 500kb/s; although this morning I managed to download a demo game from the Nividia site at 700kb/s. Incidently I tried both the UK and States Nividia sites, and there was little difference.

I am using an Acer laptop with a 64bit 2.0Ghz cpu and Vista os. The speed test sites do not appear to download anything, so is there something wrong with my computer in getting data from the modem?

There was an article in the paper the other day about poor performance of broadband connections, with many users complaining about poor download speeds.

Two questions:

1 Could there be something wrong with my computer?

2 What sort of speeds other people are getting.

Try this speedtest click me double click the blue news-euro link to get it started,Ive just tried it and its working,if it doesn't for you theres obviously something wrong with your connection, are you using wireless? if you are have you tried connecting directly to the modem?

Which ISP are you with, do they have a fair user policy, are you a heavy downloader?

I got 1.7Mb/s. Yes I am using wireless. No I am not a heavy downloader. I am with Direct Save Telecommunications; not sure about their fair user policy. I will try a direct connection.

Just tried a direct connection, and it has actually given me a lower reading of 1.5Mb/s, but that just may be because of congestion on the net.

Welcome to the forum eddieprice

Could you please keep all your posts relating to your Broadband Speed to the same thread.

I will lock your other two threads.

Thanks.

Maxping.

Sorry I posted before your message got through. I have now made a download from
http://gb.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/6.06/kubuntu-6.06.1-desktop-i386.iso
as suggested on the other thread - now closed - and it started off at about 110kb/s and rose slowly to about 230kb/s. Not as quick as your 550kb/s, but then I am on a different exchange, and it was at a different time of day. But it is not too different, so it looks as though my connection and computer are okay, and it is more likely to be congestion on the net. So much for the much quoted "up to 8Mb/s" by the ISPs.

I think that concludes this thread

Which ISP are you with?

You can check if its your ISP or BT by doing the test here - http://www.more-solutions.co.uk/support/bt-test-user.html

It can be a bit slow but will get there in the end.

My results -

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps

DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)

Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5924 kbps

Wow! That is quite impressive. My results are:

IP profile 7150kbps
DSL connection 448kbps (up) 4414kbps (down)
Actual IP throughput 4414kbps

The connection would appear to be okay

Thanks

Eddie P

ps. Sorry my ISP is Direct Save Telecom. I think it is part of Eclipse because my logon has adsl.eclipse.co.uk in the username.

Next time you get very slow speedtest speeds do the BT test and you will then know where the blame lies

Hi Maxping. I am most embarrassed. I have been confusing bits and bytes. I thought I should just add this one last entry just in case other readers are making the same mistake.

The various speed test sites were all giving similar results for my broadband connection of download speeds of 3 to 6 Mega bits per sec, while in the download window which appears on the screen when downloading a file, which is saved to disk, the best reading that I was getting was about 600 MB/s, Note the upper case B for byte. So 600 MB/s translates to 4.8 Mbps. Admittedly some sites were only downloading at less than 100kB/s, but even this translates to 800 Kb/s.

Thanks for your patience. My broadband connection is okay.

Eddie P
