Soon i will be moving to the far north of Scotland to the Suthland area.
At the moment the best connection i can get at my new home will be 512k adsl and im guessing it will be quite far from the exchange.
Is there anyone living in that area who plays online games and can tell me what you ping is to servers and also what latencey issues there may be?
Or anyone who is in a simular situation can you help me also? (you may live in another remote part of scotland or remote part of another country) I would find your experiences useful thanks
I just have to ask this question. Do you have any choice in moving to Sutherland? If you don't then I'm not sure how we can help as the ping and latency are out of your control, aren't they?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
Theres too many variables to say.. It can depend on your ISP, your routing and also the type of connection you have. Therefore someone else in the same town may well get very different latency to you.
Distance from the exchange shouldnt make any difference to your latency, although other factors such as if you have interleaving applied on your line will.
Which ISP are you thinking of going with? If the checker comes back with 512kb or even 1Mb then Id look at going with an ISP that will provide you with a fixed rate adsl line and NOT one that will put you on maxdsl, then throttle your speeds back.
Maxdsl can be troublesome on some very long lines. Not only that theres a very high chance (most likely) that interleaving will be applied to your line if the ISP uses max and therefore your latency will be higher.
Up there youre possibly looking at 1st hop latency of around 30+ms. If interleaving is applied then add on another 20-40 ms.
