New B/band User Needs Simple Explanation
      #352873 - Tue Jun 12 2007 10:16 PM

Hi there.
Please note that I am definitely not computer or b/band knowledgeable! I am on Tiscali Max, all set up correctly, no connection problems etc.
Can someone very kindly explain why, when I place my mouse pointer over the b/band connection icon on the toolbar it says 7.4 mnps, yet speed tests at Tiscali website indicate uner 3 mbps? Maybe they're not connected?
Another strange thing. When I was on dial-up I used a pay-for programme called "OnSpeed." (It was fine.) It is supposed to work with b/band, but I did speed tests with it activated/deactivated and when it was activated I was losing speed of around 3/4 to 1 mb. Not a query really, just curious. I know "ObSpeed" works by compression.
Thanks to anyone who can take the time!

You have a 8MB connection but due to your distance from the exchange and line quality e.t.c. you will never see the full speed.
I am also on 8MB and usually get from 4000kbps to 5500kbps depending on the time of day i test.
In the peak hours when most users are online it can be a fair bit slower than say at 11 p.m.

Try this test - http://www.giganews.com/performance.html (click the blue news-euro link to start it)

Thanks for that...I suspected that the toolbar readout was only line potential.
I've done a speedtest as you suggested and achieved 2.5 mbps. This was at 7.35 pm.
Again, thanks for your trouble.

Well, it has to be Tiscali doesn't it. I might as well have gone for the 2mb as often the speed is under that....but at least I get free 01 and 02 phone calls at any time of the week.
