Bt Broadband ripoff
      #201782 - Wed Jun 22 2005 05:44 PM

Hi,
As an old age pensioner I decided (for economy reasons) I would go to broadband basic at £17-99 as I was finding £24-99 per month a bit tight. Guess what.?? I have to pay £25 for a new modem. Why??? Well as the lady said. The one I have will not work with the cheaper service. That means, on my current saving of £5 a month by changing it will take me 5 months to benefit. I am not destitute or anything like that But just angry that they can do this. I guess they may be a little desperate and need the cash.
Anyway its nice to have a moan isn't it?
Ralph

What? What a load of codswallop! Forget about changing your modem, change your ISP!

I agree, take a look here. You can get 2Mb from £14.99 a month.

Hi sinbad,

Just seen your post. Firstly, I just migrated to the BT Broadband package (next one up from you) and was supplied with a Voyager 205 modem/router free of charge as part of the deal. Secondly, a friend of mine just recently signed up for the BT Broadband Basic package (same as you) and got a free Voyager 105 modem as part of the deal. I set it up for him yesterday. The modem he already had, a Speedtouch 330 would have been OK, but the deal states free modem and that's what he got. If you check on BT's webpage offering their broadband deals you will see that all packages offer free set up and free modem or modem/router if you order on line. Now that makes no difference as we both ordered over the phone and in my case I didn't have an internet connection at the time of ordering.
Have another go at them and threaten to cancel the deal and if necessary find another telephone provider. When I first rang BT I said I can't order online, to qualify for free set and router, as my connection has been disconnected by my ISP. They said that doesn't matter everyone gets the deal. Can you imagine them turning anyone away?

Good Luck,

Girrock.

sinbad,

Sorry I misread your post and jumped in feet first. I thought you had signed up with BT. The info might be useful anyway.

Girrock.

u buy the modem. u dont rent/borrow it. how long were u on the package up from basic? if it was a regrade within a certain time u get the 25 quid 4 the first router refunded on returning it. otherwise, if u dont want to buy ur own router, just want to rent, then try another isp like the first reply. u arent only buying the router from bt, u buy their service and guarantees. whatever anyone says about them, i have had nothing but excellent service, and the only time i did have a prob (caused by some numpty trying to switch my calls etc to a different carrier without my consent) they fixed it asap, refunded some charges id incurred, and apologised. they are always polite n helpful (not like the numpties at ntl!) and so i cant agree with you. the cost of the pack is in black and white, its not hidden away anywhere, its at the top of the page on their website (in the sentence telling you its free if you order online, saving you 25 quid!). nothing in life is free, so this just seems to be moaning for the sake of it.
