Hello, while I am able to cure most of the problems I encounter with PCs, and most software, there are many that I cannot. Now, for some reasong, when I launch windows from cold, and I try to connect to the net, I am imformed that my modem isnt responding, so then I shut down, start in DOS mode, type then type exit, and windows restarts, then I am able to connect to the net, why is this happening? The only thing I have installed lately, is Norton Virus, which I know have uninstalled, but the problem still perstists. Any insight would be appreciated. Future. future - Fri Feb 01 15:39 2002 reply
Future,There is a possibility that your Norton is already trying to dial out for an auto update, you might want to disable that feature to see if that solves the problem. If not, I would suggest that you re-install your modem drivers including the enumerator, or update them from the net Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 01 20:59 2002 reply
Thank you Iain, I have however, uninstalled Norton, but the problem still persists, also, I have the latest drivers for my modem. It is baffling, because when I shut down and choose start in DOS mode, then exit, when Windows restarts, it works. Thank you again for your help. Future - Fri Feb 01 23:02 2002 reply
I can't get into 'Bios' I;m using ME. I try starting my PC and holding down the Del key but no success. I've tried holging down the Esc key, again no luck!!! What am I doing wrong?? Iain, thanks for your help in the past. Ialways read your comments. You deserve an OBE. Bruno - Wallington - Fri Feb 01 11:23 2002 reply
Bruno, Some systems use the F2 key. (If that doesn't work try one of the other F keys, most likely F1) Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 01 13:41 2002 reply
Please can anyone help? I have set my History to clear every 6 days, but it doesn't and I cannot understand why.....am I doing something wrong? When I set it, I always click ok, so I am a miss has to why it isn't clearing it. Thank you in anticipation Linda Linda Haynes - Lancashire - Fri Feb 01 10:04 2002 reply
Linda, the history will be cleared after the 6th day, but as you use the net each day, a new 6 day period will start, so, if you started on say Monday, then the total history for that day, would be cleared on Sunday, then Tuesdays would be clear on MOnday, etc Hope that helps future - Fri Feb 01 13:59 2002 reply
Linda, I am assuming that you have gone to Internet Options | General Tab and set days to keep in History to 6 days, then clicked apply? Internet Explorer History works on a First In First Out principle, so that any thing less than six days is kept in your history folder until the end of the sixth day. If want you want to do is clear clear your history on a regular basis, you will need to use task scheduler in Programs | Accessories | System Tools Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Feb 01 12:06 2002 reply
Yes Iain, that is exactly what I have been doing.... Well, I have looked in the Task Scheduler, but there is nothing about History, or at least nothing that is actually called History, so I dared not really start clicking around, knowing my luck, the whole lot would disappear....:) So when you say it is kept until the end of the 6th day, should it then all clear? or do I have to set it up as a Task.....that all looked a little complicating to be honest Iain...maybe I will just keep doing it manually....it's hard I know....:) thank you again Iain....you are super...Linda Linda Haynes - Lancashire - Fri Feb 01 13:00 2002 reply
No what would happen is that say for instance you had them for 6 days, on the seventh day, day one would be removed to make way for day seven. If you wish to continue doing it manually, go here http://www.webattack.com/download/dlcleanup.shtml for a freeware download (752kb) Very good at cleaning things up! I dont know much about XP, MS OFFICE, or WINDOWS XP, except that a lot of people seem to be having a great deal of problems with it. However, like all versions of windows it requires the correct drivers for each device/periphral. Now, it maybe that your drivers have become corrupt, if this is the case, then remove them, and then re-boot, and re-install them. First though, check your speakers, make sure they are connected correctly, and working. Hope that helps future - Fri Feb 01 14:08 2002 reply
Hello good people Can anyone help me with a graphics problem? due to my own stupidity I have just had to reinstall windows 98SE.the problem is that my graphics are stuck on 16 colours and resolution of 640x480 pixels I have attempted to update the driver for the vga but the wizard tells me that the best driver is installed. Does anyone have any whizz ideas? Simon Clay - Naunton - Thu Jan 31 17:27 2002 reply
You need to know the make of your graphics card, so that you can get the correct driver from it, it may be that 98 supports your card, but you still need to know what card it is. Once you have found what type of card you have, you can go to DRIVERSGUIDE.COM to get the correct driver. In the meant time, try changing the driver in display/settings/advanced/adaptor, and change to svga, or pci svga, this may work it may not.....As I said you need to know the make of your graphics card. future - not given - Thu Jan 31 23:38 2002 reply
Hi - I wonder if someone can help me. I recently bought a Packard Bell XMedia 5106. It had Word 2000 pre-installed. The problem is that I can't send e-mails as an attachment. When I try to re-install it a message comes up saying CABS32/??? not found. Also the machine came with a CD/RW but I can't get it to RW. I have to save everything to disc and then copy it over but then the disc becomes Read Only. I hope someone will be able to help me. I have written to Packard Bell but as yet I have received no response. Peterborough (which is my nearest PC World) is quite a long way to go and I don't see why I should pay the £1 per minute they are asking for me to ring up if it is a fault with the machine. I have tried to e-mail them also but they still can't answer me. The only thing they did say is that I needed something else to make the CD/RW work which I find amazing as it wouldn't be a CD/RW if I had to buy something else to go with it. Sorry for the long message but I am getting very frustrated now. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Wed Jan 30 18:18 2002 reply
Hello, the problem with your cdrw, is, I believe due to the software that you have for it, you see, to use the cdrw as a floppy drive, so that you can edit data on the cd, requires PACKET COPYING SOFTWARE, which makes the cdr/w behave like a floppy drive. If you dont have that type of software, then you can still save to cdr/w, but wont be able to edit, although of course with a cdrw you can over write stuff. By default, data that is written to a cd is read only. A programme called Direct CD is packet software, and has long as it supports your cdrw, it will allow you to use it has a floppy, like you have in the past. As for the email problem, that could be down to your ISP, not sure though. future - Fri Feb 01 14:19 2002 reply
Sue, Question 2 first regarding your CDRW drive. A couple of questions for you, just establish some facts You have got your cd burning software installed, a program like NERO, CEQUADRAT, Adaptec cd creator? Are you using CDR discs or CDRW discs there is a difference , and if they are CDRW discs did you format them first? As for the Word problem, three things prevent a cd from being read; a faulty cd read; film or dust on the cd; dust on the cd lens. There is also the possibility that you have only been given a recovery disc rather than the full version, in which case PC world would have to re-install it for you Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Jan 30 21:57 2002 reply
Hi - Im not very techie but it was pre-installed into the machine when I bought it and it says that it is a CDRW. I use CDRW discs which I used in my previous CDRW on my old machine which worked perfectly. I can read the CD but I can't amend things on it and I have to save it to floppy first - I can't just save it to CD which I used to be able to do. The Word problem isn't really anything to do with the CDRW - it's an e-mail problem and also if I try to install security patches I get a message saying "Can't find CABS/32/Data1" or something like that. Word has a feature for detect and fix. I have tried this and it comes up with the same thing. My understanding is that the computer needs this CABS/32 as part of its running system. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Thu Jan 31 08:16 2002 reply
The to solvethe word problem you will need to insert your Office Disk, so that it can repair the problem. It does sound like the disks aren't formatted, and therefore the cd burning software is automatically burning to disc Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Jan 31 15:53 2002 reply
I have tried that and the problem I have there is that I can't get passed being asked for the CABS32/DATA1. Sue Bradbury - Spalding - Thu Jan 31 19:13 2002 reply

Sounds like a duff drive to me. You could split into several partitions using the bit that works for Windows and the bit with problems for data but at the end of the daya, a new drive might be in order. Look up the drive manufacturers site and put in the serial number - might be under warranty still. Nick Nick Cheesman - Alton - Sat Feb 02 18:42 2002 reply

I dont know why your files are not opening correctly, but have you run a virus checker, if not, then I suggest that you obtain a virus programme, and check for a virus. As for the boot failure, it maybe that your hd is sticking. If this is the case, then it could be there is an underlying problem with your hd. You can enable S.M.A.R.T in your BIOS/CMOS, this should alert you if there are any problems with the drive. The hd spins up, and sends a signal to the BIOS/CMOS to say heyy, im here.....but if the drive is sticking, it wont spin up intime, and the BIOS reports a boot failure. Or some other message informing you that your hd isnt present etc. I hope this helps. Future - not given - Wed Jan 30 14:51 2002 reply

Are you aware that IE6 doesnt come with JAVA support, you need to download and install the patch for this. Im not sure where you can obtain it,but you could try sun micor systems. Do you allow AOL settings to connect you to the internatl?..If so, try creating a new connect, using DUN...Dial Up Network. Then use this to connect to your isp, then run IE, and see if that works. If it does, then the problem maybe with AOL. Next, you can run scandisk to see if there are any errors on your hd. I hope this helps. Future - not given - Wed Jan 30 14:57 2002 reply
Hi all, I keep getting the error:-Rnaapp has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.RNAAPP caused an invalid page fault in module WININET.DLL at 017f:630160b8. This only happens when offline, and when `ok` is pressed, it comes back one more time, then goes. This can happen anytime, and is now getting annoying. I think the error coincides with installing Explorer 6. I am using Windows 98se. Any help as to how to fix this would be appreciated, thanks. Rob Pickavance - Cheshire - Tue Jan 29 12:35 2002 reply
I believe that the file RNAAPP.EXE is corrupted, or an associated file. However, it could also be amemory error, or lack of hd space.. If you have at least 128MBR RAM, and at least 5GB free hard drive space, then it is corrupt files. Visit the MS site, for more info on this problem. If after you have searched Microsoft, it still persists, then you may have to re-install 98. Future - Wed Feb 06 21:56 2002 reply
You could try running SFC Sytem File Check. Goto start, run, type in sfc, and press enter. You will be prompted to search for corrupt, missing files, if any are found, you will be prompted to re-install them, so you will need your 98 cd. Secondly, run scandisk to see if there are any errors. It is best to start in safe mode to run scandisk. Good luck Future - not given - Wed Jan 30 15:06 2002 reply

Does anyone know of a utility that will allow me to run programs (that require the disk to be inserted into my ROM drive) without having to insert the disk? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Allan Stevenson - Belfast - Tue Jan 29 11:52 2002 reply
Yes, it would take up a phenomanal amount of hard drive space. And if you do this for a lot of games, then you will run out very quickly. But your orig, post was how to play a game, that needs the cd,but without having the cd in the drive, I do not know of any software that allows this. You must realise that the reason a cd for a particular game is required to be in the drive, while playing, is because not all data is transfered to the hard drive on installation, and so data that isnt, but is required by the game, will be on the cd, and so therefore, making it necessary to have the cd in the drive. Also, copyright is another reason for the cd being needed as well. Future - Mon Feb 11 00:51 2002 reply
You could try copying the entire cd to your hd, and installing it from you hd. You will need to make a folder to store it, so that it doesnt just go anywhere. Please note:, some programmes do not allow you to do this. Future - not given - Wed Jan 30 15:10 2002 reply

Have you recently installed or tried to uninstall Real Jukebox? This is a Real Jukebox Dll. You have two options, both as easy as the other. First method: reinstall Real Jukebox. (If you were trying to uninstall, do so through Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel) Method 2: Go to http://pacosdrivers.com/dll.asp Type in pngu3263 in the search box. Your download applet will pop up with two options. Pick the second "save file to disk". Save it to C:\Windows\System Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Jan 29 06:05 2002 reply

Hello Julie, You dont say what speed your PII CPU is, however, you maybe able to upgrade it to a PII 450. If you want a faster system, then you will need to change the motherboard, and CPU. If your video card, sound card, modem, are external to the mother board, then you can keep these, and buy a board that doesnt have these things on board, you can keep your floppy drive, hard drive, cdrom drive and RAM. However, if you go for a board that has video, modem, sound, usb, lan, onboard, and your case doesnt support this, you will need a new case as well. Hope this helps! I do not recommend, that you use drvspace. It also slows down you system, and reduces performance. How drvspace works, is to creat one large file that contains all your date, if this file gets corrupted, then the chances are your data will be lost. I would suggest that if you can, buy a larger hard drive. There are some inexpensive 20gb hds, around, so it is worth shoping around. Hope this helps! Future - not given - Wed Jan 30 15:31 2002 reply

Ok, this is drastic, but as yo have tried to update the driver without success, then try this, but it is drastic, and may not work. goto start/settings/control panel/ the open the system icon, click on device manager, and locate hd controlers, if it isnt expanded then do so now, and then, click the second from bottom, and remove it, then the one above, remove it, then finaly the last one, remove, by this time, you puter may have already crashed, however, when you reboot, it should install drivers that will work, if this fails, re.post. It is highly likely, based on the fact that you can hear other sounds, that the card are using a MIDI format, and that your MIDI player has not been enabled. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia Click on the "Audio" Tab Go down to the Midi Music Playback. Choose your preferred Device. If you cannot choose a device, first go to the "Devices" Tab, click the + sign to the left of Midi Devices and Instruments, then click Properties. Click "Use Midi features on this Device, then Apply. If there is no Midi Devices and Instruments showing, it means that a value in your BIOS will need to be altered. If this is the case, post back with exactly which Tiny system you have, and also which Souncard is installed. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Jan 28 17:49 2002 reply
Thank you Iain for your prompt reply.I am still unable to get sound on my cards.I followed through the procedure that you advised. When I reached the part where it says Midi Music Playback it reads Microsoft GS wavetable SW synth. If I click on the drop down box it reads Creative SBCI external Midi.I tried the second box but no difference.I then clicked the Devices tab and the Midi Devices and Instrument has a + sign at it.On the Audio box it reads preferred device Creative Sound Blaster PC1120 As I am fairly new to computers I don't know if this is the sound card that you were looking for.My PC is a Pentium 3 1000MHZ.Thank you once again for your help.If you can think of something else I can try I will be grateful.John. john stevenson - inverness - Tue Jan 29 18:03 2002 reply
I have installed MS Office 97 Professional from a borrowed disc on our pc in order to use Microsoft access as part of my night school course. All the elements I don't actually require such as Excel, Outlook Express and Powerpoint load and work OK but the one element I need to use for two units only in my course "Microsoft Access" will not start. The message "Microsoft Access can't start because there is no licence for it on this machine" Why will everything else work but not Access. I only require it to work for a few days, after which I never need to use this software again. Our p.c is new and contains Works 2000 and I have no real use of outdated software on Office 97 other than to complete these units of course work. Any ideas how to get Access to work without telling me I need to spend over £100 on another Office 97 disc. Philomena Philomena Barr - Lancashire - Mon Jan 28 12:57 2002 reply
