In the back of your PC should be three sockets and a trapezoid shaped port in a row. They should be coloured. Normal protocol is that the mic is the centre of the three sockets, but you should see a pictogram as well by the socket.
Once you have plugged it in, Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds (and/or Multimedia). Click the Voice tab. Click Voice test and run the wizard. It should now be configured

This dll is part of DirectX, a graphics rendering application. If you are running windows 98, go to Start | Run and type in SFC. This should restore it. Alternatively, go to Dr D's and type in ddraw, choose your EXACT operating system, and download to your c:\windows\System folder. You have another alternative, to get your game disk out and look for directx and re-install it.

I'm having problems with my Direct Connection Cable which I have just set up. It seems to be setting up OK and tells me both computers are connected, then it asks for the host computer's name, which I put in, then I get the message Cannot find the host computer, though the display seems to be showing the computers as connected. Can anyone help?

Visit WWW.LPT.COM (Direct Parallel)which has a direct cable testing programme. Save the file to a floppy and run it on both cable connected computers. After testing, you should be told what to do to complete the direct cable connection. My problem was caused by unmatching protocols. I'm a lot better now!

I have a major problem... Every time I boot up my PC, I get the following message ERROR LOADING PROGRAM Not enought memory to run RBH42E5.EXE. This program changes every time: VY50A5.EXE; UESC202.EXE; LGO6331.EXE; NAA023.EXE; YIJ4271.EXE; ORZD374.EXE, etc. To give you the history, I had McAfee Viruscan on my system , and realised that I had not updated my DAT files for some time. When I tried to launch the program I got a message saying that VShield was not running and would I like to launch it, when I clicked yes, there was a further message which I cannot remember. I contacted McAfee support who advised me that Viruscan is not compatible with IE6. I decided to revert back to IE5.5, but then I started getting error messages as above. I then reinstalled my bought version if Viruscan, which had been upgraded via the internet. But they no longer offer upgrading to the current version. Next thing I went and bought Norton Antivirus (McAfee was not in the shop). It installed ok, but... I still get the error messages. Sometimes the whole PC freezes When I try to run Norton it tells me to restart the PC. There are no viruses (virii?) on the PC according to Norton, but something is seriously wrong. Can ANYONE help????
Allan McPhail - Cumbernauld - Sat Mar 30 21:51 2002

It turns out I do have a virus. It prevents Norton from running, and therefore the definition files are older than the virus. I am currently trying to get rid of it, without much success so far, but keep your fingers crossed for me!

How can I undo this so it will open with Windows Media Player. Ross, I am assuming that you have either Winzip or some other File compression software installed. If so,
On the desktop, double-click My Computer.
Click the file that you want a different program to open.
On the File menu, click Properties.
Click Change.
Click the name of the program that you want to open the file, or click Other to select a program that is not listed.
If you don't have Winzip, go to cnet.com, then start from the top.

Hi, Ian, thanks very much for the advice. I have got Winzip on my pc, I eventually got to where I needed to go to change the association of the files.Keep up the good work, ross.

I've tried and I've tried but I can't figure it out!!! When my copy of Windows 98 opens a new window, it never opens it 'maximised' - so instead I have to do it, which gets really annoying! Anyone that could help me with this simple task would get my eternal thanks!!!
Mike - Lee-On-The-Solent - Sat Mar 30 10:37 2002

Mike there are two ways of doing this. One is a bit laborious, the other quick. The first way is to
Go to Start | Settings| Taskbar and Start Menu.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced.
In the Start Menu folder, find the shortcut to the program you want to start, and then click it. On the File menu, click Properties, and then click the Shortcut tab.
click Maximized in the Run field to get the program to open as a full-screen window.
The easy way is to go to this site and download Autosizer!!

why would you format your hard drive for a virus....(unless its infected everything). as your PC can still access the internet ( otherwise how would you post your prob!!)try going to www.grisoft.com and download AVG antivirus, it's free and has regular updates. i've been using it for over a year and not had a virus since downloading it. once you've downloaded it all you have to do is make sure you also download the latest update and run a complete test. any virus found will hopefully be taken to a virus vault and your PC will be healthy again. hope this helps..

Hi, I would not reccomend downloading files off the internet. I wanted to install my webcam, and when I downloaded some files of the internet my Soundcard stopped working. When i managed to solve that, the CD drive knackered up. Also the guy who built you the computer is breaking the law not giving you the CD. He probably just installed it off a copy he has. You could report him at www.mircosoft.com, maybe he will start talking. martin

Thanks guys for your replies.Ian the files missing are kstvtune.ax and please go steady I am pretty new at this game.
Peter Jones - Accrington - Fri Mar 29 21:48 2002
reply

The file will be on your computer, but in a compressed form in the CAB files. The mission, should you decide to accept it, is to extract kstvtune.ax from the Driver11.cab file. Your first task is to locate Driver11.cab.
Go to Start | Search | for files and folders
Type in Driver11.cab.
Note the location of the file (write it down if you have to)
You're doing well, and we'll move on to the next stage

Go to Start | Run | Type in SFC
Now check the bullet for Extracting One File.
Put the filename in the box and click Start.
You will now give the location of the cabs file (which you noted in stage 1 and where the specific file is to be stored, this is going to be c:\windows\system. Click OK.
note: You only need to know where the CABs are located. The specific CAB that holds the required file will automatically be located by the extraction utility.

This message and your computer WILL NOT self destruct!!!

Can someone help me as I try to get to grips with editing and printing digital photos? I set my Nikon Coolpix 880 on 2048x1536 maximum setting and calculate that the maximum photo I can print out at 300dpi is 5.12"x6.8". If I set the printed image size to the latter and change the default of 72dpi to 300dpi i Adobe Photoshop, will these settings be kept if I take the photos into Publisher, or do I lose all settings? If settings are lost what are the default settings then in Publisher?

The printer settings will be kept for each programme that you use to print out with, unless you select to allow the programme to over-ride the printer settings. You control printer settings through software that came with your printer, but some printers use hardware commands to control settings.

It sounds like your computer was once connected to a network, and is waiting for the host machine to respond. If you go to control panel, and remove the network it should clear the problem. It is also possible that your computer has a network card installed with a boot ROM on it, in which case, it might be best to take that out, but only if your sure you dont need it, and also that you are confident in having your puter apart. Once the network problem is solved your computer will boot as normal.

Did you d/l the correct drivers for your graphics card, because the ones that came with it, may not be truely compatable with Windows ME, also, email both companies and ask if that card will work with your Dell Computer, I dont see why it shouldnt, but best to email them to ask. Of course, it is possible that you have a faulty card, but unlikely. I have the same card, and it is working fine under windows 98se, so I think it is just the drivers, however, if you are sure you have the correct drivers for your card that are truely compatible with Windows ME, then need to look at changing it, or the computer.

Updated drivers downloaded from Nvidia website-no better.E mailed Dell they said it was not compatible and to buy direct from them.I rang their number and they do not sell upgraded graghics cards but put me on to their supplier. The supplier said the card is compatible and they would try to sell me the same one.No joy.Supergrace who make the card, as far as I can search, do not have a helpline for useless buggers like me.Anyone else want to try or I have a 64mb card for sell which would suit W98SE.

If your computer is working correctly, having the name of a programme left in the Add/Remove display, wont affect windows, there is a programme that will remove this, and if you understand the registery you could modify that to do the same thing, I cannot remember the name of the programme that you need. Another thing would be to put XP back the way that you had it before you installed the programme, again my knowledge of XP is limited at this time, although, I do know this can be done. But as I said,if XP is working fine, then dont fix it.

You dont say what OS your using, but if your using windows 9se, then go to start/run, then type MSCONFIG, and press enter, when the programme loads, click on startup, then uncheck where it says about AOL starting up, not sure of the exact line, but you should be able to notice which one it is, here you can also prevent any other programme that you dont want starting up, remember to write down what it looked like before you changed it, so that you can put it back. You will need to restart your puter once you have altered the startup. Hope that helps.

Hi, My problem is that no matter what I do, all jpgs always open with Microsoft Photo editor. They used to open with Adobe Photoshop which is what I still want to use. I have changed the file associations which are now set for jpgs to open with Photoshop. I have tried your solution on p 82in the magazine which suggests to "Open with" and "always use this programme to open this kind of file" but still, every single time, they open in Ms Photo editor. It's driving me mad. In order to edit any pictures I now have to Open Photoshop first and open the photos from within the programme. What else can I try? I have also tried clicking on the file and looking for a "Change" option but there isn't one. I run WIN 98.

Try going back to file Associations and deleting the file type..
If I'm correct the file type should then go back to being an unrecognised type (showing the windows logo) when you click on it you then get the choose option..

Why not uninstall MS Photo Editor, and then the jpg's should open with Photoshop, if you still need or want to use MS Photo Editor, then re-install it, and while it is installing, it should prompt you to agree to allowing it to be the default image editor, just choose no. Hope that helps.

I dont know whether you want to use this programme, if you do you will need to re-install it, as some of its main compenents have been deleted, you could try to restore it from the recycle bin if it is in there. To stop the win.ini file from calling this programme, go to start, choose run, they type, win.ini, and it should open up in Notepad, where it says lOAD= delete what ever is after the word load=, and do the same to the RUN= line to, now go to file, and choose save, not save as, just save, now reboot your computer, and it should be ok.

I am not truely familiar with Acrobat Reading, but one thing you could try, is to save the policy to your hard drive, and printing it offline, if this doesnt work, then you could try cutting and pasting it into MSWORD and then printing it from there. When printing online, make sure that there is little net activitiy with other net programmes, and also make sure that your printer is online and as finished testing itself/cleaning. If you are using a firewall make sure it is set to allow you to d/l and print documents, some firewalls are set by default to prevent online printing as the port is considered security breach.
