I am having trouble with my PC. When I try to save anything I get the message cannot find file 602T. Do I need to reinstall Windows 98 or is there an easy way to get around this? A Howes - Wed Apr 10 13:07 2002 reply
I have recently reinstalled Windows Me,and have been left with 3 problems. The first is that during installation an error occured which says that 'C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wbvw.dll'can't be found,After installation is over I checked WINDOWS SYSTEM and the dll is there.Secondly,on boot-up I get a box which says that there is a problem with the Short Cut 'Resume Windows Update Installation.Ink'and that this may be found on the hard disk ,another computer etc.,etc.,.Thirdly,I cannot upgrade to IE6.The files won't install properly,I had it before with no problem.I can't help but think all three are connected but how? When I reinstalled Me I simply put the disc in the CD drawer and ran it.Should I have done something different?I suppose it is all a big learning curve as they say,can anyone help please. Ian Broadhead - Wakefield - Wed Apr 10 12:09 2002 reply
Ian, wbvw.dll is part of your Internet Explorer Setup. I would suggest that you go to Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs and remove Internet Explorer 6 from there if it's there. If not, in the hope that you haven't installed too much, I think you may have to back to the beginning. Before you do, come back and post, and we can walk you through it! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Apr 10 15:18 2002 reply
Many thanks for your response Iain.I looked in Add/Delete Programs and IE6 is not there to delete.Since original post have re-installed Me once again via boot-disk and CD-Rom on the advice of a friend but things are still the same.Would the same problem be causing the 'Problem with Shortcut-Resume Windows Update Installation.Ink' box on start-up.I am looking forward to your advice. Ian Broadhead - Wakefield - Wed Apr 10 21:36 2002 reply
Ian, I am assuming that you have a full version of ME, as you seem to be able to re-install at your leisure. ME seems to prefer being installed on a clean hard drive. So I would suggest that you format the drive if you haven't already done so. If you aren't sure how to format your hard drive, here goes
Restart your computer with the Startup disk in the floppy disk drive. NOTE: If you are using a Windows 95 Startup disk, a command prompt is displayed and you can skip to step 2.
If you are using a Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Me Startup disk, select the Start computer without CD-ROM support menu option when the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed.
When a command prompt (a<: :)is displayed, type format c: /s (note the spaces), and then press ENTER. This command transfers the system files and should only be used when you format drive C (or your "active" drive). For all other partitions, type format drive: (where drive is the letter of the partition that you want to format). When you successfully run the Format.com tool, you receive the following message: WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format? Press Y, and then press ENTER to format drive C. After the format procedure is finished, you receive the following message: Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)? **NOTE:** This is an optional feature that you can use to type a name for the drive. You can either type an 11-character name for the drive, or you can leave it blank by pressing ENTER. Reboot.

I seem to have a similar problem to Julie Reid of Preston, but it is only after using EndItAll that my computer freezes on shutdown, has to be turned off and then on rebooting goes through the scandisc routine. Maybe this isn't a bad thing but it does slow things down. If I haven't used EndItAll, then shutdown is normal. Anyone else had similar problems or is there a way of fixing it other than uninstalling EndItAll JalanG Liverpool JAlanG - Liverpool - Wed Apr 10 10:12 2002 reply

Julie, I'm no expert on but 32mb of memory is very low and will cause a general slow down of your PC especially as if you are running a anti-virus,firewall and other applications in the background or on startup.I'll assume you are running an older system and probably memory PC100 or PC133 so go to www.crucial.com and price up some more memory.Link to the UK site, 128mb are quite cheap and this company will match your system and motherboard.Check to see how Hard disk drive space you have left, you may be running out of room.Empty recycle bin in case that is full.Web user had an article about www.pcpitstop.com which gave users a performance check on their PC's, I found this very useful and cleared a few issues up.Try after booting up pressing **ONLY ONCE** ctrl+Alt+Delete once and find out what is running you may find something has started which is unnecessary.Do not delete it check it out.Virtual memory should be left to windows to manage unless -by my experience- you are running certain types of software like CAD.Hope this is of some use...........Cause it has taken me ages with one finger typing! Hi- I am having a problem with my pc freezing up & crashing every time I want to open a Word document. I am using a second-hand pc, running Windows95, using Word2000. Recently I was looking through my documents, and was opening and closing files quite quickly in order to find something. Suddenly the pc crashed, and would not shut down. I tried to manually shut down via the CTRL, ALT, DEL method, but a message kept popping up saying "Your computer is dangerously low on resources". In the end I had to switch it off and run scandisc upon turning it on again. A checkfile/ scan file was created, and I saved the undo- file on a floppy, as requested. Now every time I try to open a Word document ( even a new one) the same thing happens. The shop where I bought the pc said all they can do is to re-format the hard drive, but I can't believe that is the only option! I have tried re-installing the Word programme with my disc, but it hasn't made any difference. I have checked my pc's memory, and seem to have plenty of it left. Please help, as I don't want to lose all my hard drive information in a re-format! I have also checked for viruses, and that's not it either. Ms.B.Entwistle - Manchester - Tue Apr 09 22:08 2002 reply
32bit applications such as Word, will, when opened and closed rapidly, eventually cause a "memory leak". It may be curable, using a kernel32 update patch, Go to the following site, Q148336 and download the patch krnupd.exe from there. I'll be completely honest, Word 2000 was never designed to be run on Win 95 and you may well in time get the same error again, if indeed this patch fixes it. Good luck Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Apr 09 23:02 2002 reply
Thanks for your advice. It's ironic that you commented on the fact that Word 2000 shouldn't really be run on W95, as my second hand computer came from the Government sponsored "Computers Within Reach" scheme, who supplied the software! It doesn't surprise me though, because their support/ expertise / customer service here in Manchester has been less than satisfactory from the beginning, I'm sorry to say. Anyway, I tried the patch you mentioned, but it hasn't made any difference. The screen still freezes up, I always manage to get as far as the opening logo for Word2000, then everything stops. Everything else on the computer can still be accessed and used. I would appreciate any further advice you might have for me, thanks. Ms.B.Entwistle - Manchester - Thu Apr 11 01:17 2002 reply
It might be worth increasing the amount of virtual memory that your computer uses. Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | System. Click the Performance tab, and click the Virtual Memory button. Choose to choose your own setting, and change the maximum value to 2½ times the size of your RAM. So if your Actual Ram is 64Mb, your virtual memory setting will be 160 :) Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Apr 12 08:55 2002 reply
Thanx for that. I'm not sure how to apply your suggestion...When I open the dialogue box for adjusting the virtual memory, there are 3 boxes: the first says "Windows- hard disk- c\418MB free". Then there are another 2 boxes, asking for minimum & maximum levels of virtual memory. I'm not sure which one of these 3 boxes needs to be changed to adjust the VM? To automatically put your computer into hibernation, you must be logged on as a computer administrator for you to complete this . Open Power Options in Control Panel. Click the Hibernate tab, select the Enable hibernate support check box, and then click Apply.
Put your computer in hibernation. The hibernate feature saves everything in memory on disk, turns off your monitor and hard disk, and then turns off your computer.
When you restart your computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. It takes longer to bring your computer out of hibernation than out of standby
Put your computer in hibernation when you will be away from the computer for an extended time or overnight. When you restart the computer, your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Apr 09 21:47 2002 reply
Thanks again Iain, but as I mentioned before, hibernation is not the problem. I can hibernate with the best of 'em. You can, but I'm not sure if it is wise, as I have never tried it. (I'm fortunate as I have Norton Ghost, so it isn't a problem for me!) lol Steve! Steve try this Go to Start | Find | Files and folders | Type in charmap.exe. Search in My computer If it turns up, (hopefully in C:\Windows\System32) Make a note of the location, & create a shortcut on your desktop, by right clicking | Send to | Desktop. You should then have an icon on your desktop. As for the second problem, is this happening with all fonts or just particular ones? The '!' denotes a half font, the font size fo 13! is actually 13½. There is a possibility that some of your True type fonts have been corrupted. Post back on this one Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Apr 09 07:31 2002 reply

Hello Bryon, I am assuming that has you have a sound blaster card, you will also have the relavant mixer programme to, if so, then run this programme, and make sure that the little icon for the mic is checked on. You should see what looks like small sound waves, with a small red icon next to it, and slide controls. Make sure though that you only do this to the recording controls because otherwise you will hear your own voice through your speakers. Hope this helps! Future - Mon Apr 08 12:56 2002 reply

Phill, the first thing you may have to do a virus scan. Update your virus definitions before you run the scan. There may be a version of the W32/Magistr-A Virus on board your system. If no virus is found, try this, go to Start | Run Type in msconfig, go to Startup tab and look for and uncheck Everywhere.exe. If Everywhere.exe is in your startup, then go back to Start | Run, Type in Regedit. In Regedit, click Edit in the top left, then Find, type in Everywhere.exeHighlight the value, right click it and click Delete, Press your F3 key, and delete this value. Continue with the F3 and delete until no more entries are found Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu Apr 04 08:33 2002 reply

You may have also noticed that Secure sites have https rather than http. WWW just happens to be the most common method of addressing sites Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Apr 03 17:33 2002 reply
I do understand about standard of addressing sites, which is very unfortunate for me, especially when you using search from Search engines and most of links are with www as default. I can not simple click on them and access site, every time I need to copy and paste URL in the address bar and manually remove this damn www, then I can access it. Also this is not an occurrence with all sites with www in front, with only about 20%, which is still irritating! olga - Wed Apr 03 18:22 2002 reply

I am using Windows 98. The last twice that I have used ScanDisk I have received the following message: "This drive's boot area contains important information that is damaged or invalid. This can cause windows to report the drive's free space incorrectly or slowly. ScanDisk repairs the boot area by recording the correct values in this area." Both times I have had the errors repaired. I have recently had trouble with lots of illegal operations happening in Windows Explorer and others. I have no virus and have carried out a thorough scan of the hardrive and there is no problem there. I hope someone may be able to help me stop this happening or tell me why it is. I have also had a problem running scandisk even in safe mode. Chris Buckwell - Lymington - Wed Apr 03 16:42 2002 reply
Could anyone help me please? How can I find out if my pc has a 3D graphics accelerator installed? I have looked in Sounds and Multimedia in My Computer but I'm unsure where to look and what I am actually looking for. I'm a complete beginner in this, but my son wants a pc game which says on the specifications on the back that a 3D graphics accelerator is required. I don't want to buy the game then find out we haven't the necessary things to make it work properly. Thank you. JJ - walsall - Wed Apr 03 13:45 2002 reply
JJ Go to Start | Run and type in the following: dxdiag, click OK. Go to the Display Tab. In the DirectX Features section, you should see Direct 3D Acceleration and it should say enabled. If it doesn't, but there is a button that says Enable on it, and you can click it, do so. If it says Disable, leave it as it is, it is capable of 3D Acceleration.
If you can't click it, it may be that your Direct X either needs enabling or updating. Come back if this is the case, and if you could take note of the Device displayed above, we can go from there. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Apr 03 14:34 2002 reply
Thank you Iain. We tried what you told us and found that we did have everything enabled, so my son now has his game. He was really pleased and reckons you're " safe" and "cool". Got yourself a fan there!! Many thanks for your help. JJ - walsall - Fri Apr 05 22:21 2002 reply
SHUTDOWN PROBLEM! I have windows 98 SE on my PC and IE 6. Each time I try to shutdown the PC it freezes and the following program is still on - RUNDLL32. Does anyone know what this is? and how I can shutdown properly?. John Withers - Cardiff - Tue Apr 02 18:42 2002 reply
Go to this site which, IMHO, is the best Shutdown troubleshooting site on the net! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed Apr 03 14:47 2002 reply
Does anyone have any advice on Windows XP? I've currently got W98 and have heard nothing but bad things regarding compatibility when changing over. Tristan Ashby - Attleborough - Tue Apr 02 12:45 2002 reply
Tristan, I'll tell you tomorrow when I've installed my copy on my spare computer ;) If I'm tearing my hair out, screaming blue murder, you can assume it wasn't a success!! Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Tue Apr 02 15:42 2002 reply
Well Tristan, apart from the irritation of virtually every one of my drivers not being digitally signed (including my Microsoft ones!!), all my hardware installed well and with no problems. I am going to reserve judgment on stability, but so far so good..... Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Apr 05 07:12 2002 reply
By the way Tristan, are you doing a straight upgrade or is it a full install you'll be doing? If you have got a large enough hard drive that is partitioned, you could do a dual boot and have both operating systems on. Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Apr 05 07:16 2002 reply
Iain, I've a primary 20gb and secondary 6gb hard drives. I presume this is big enough but how difficult is it to setup a dual boot? Tristan Ashby - Attleborough - Fri Apr 05 10:18 2002 reply
Tristan, More than big enough!and it is very simple. Is your 20gb HDD split into further logical drives or is it 1 big drive of 20gb. If it is the former, then I would suggest that you move out any files and folders from your D: Drive to a temporary home on the C:Drive. Then go to Microsoft's own instructions, which for one of only a few times is devoid of real jargon, and is very easy to follow. ,p>One word of advice, when it asks which file system type you want to use for XP, I would suggest that you choose NTFS as it apparently more stable than FAT32 Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Apr 05 10:42 2002 reply
Does anybody know anything about Microsoft PhotoDraw V 2.0. I used to be able to move things by 1 pixel, now it oves it by 5 or 6 so i can't get exact posistioning without nudging, and also when i save something that has lots of objects, when i reopen it its only one object. How can i fix this... Failing that anybody know how to use adobe photoshop, cos i'm stumped with that... Luke Skinner - Stourbridge - Tue Apr 02 00:28 2002 reply
Have you tried pressing your CTRL key as you move the object with your mouse? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri Apr 05 07:18 2002 reply

please can someone help me before i pull my hair out. I have downloaded a desktop theme and i need to install it. I have used winzip to unzip it but cannot work out how to install it from the unzipped file. I suppose the answer is easy really but i cant seem to do it. I would really appreciate help on this. heather cullen - cardiff - Mon Apr 01 17:34 2002 reply
Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Desktop Themes Click the theme you want in the Theme list. Use the Browse Under Settings, clear check boxes for any Windows items you don't want the theme applied to. If Desktop Themes is not installed, Go to Add/Remove Programs Click Windows Setup tab, Check Desktop Themes and then Apply. (You will need your Windows Disk for this) Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Mon Apr 01 20:57 2002
