Help!! I'm almost completely bald except for a small patch at the back of my head which I can't reach! This monitor shutdown is driving me mad (see comment below). I've now tried another monitor I managed to borrow from a friend and got the same problem as before. Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong? The Windows power management settings seem to be simple - just set them to always on and never shut down but the screen still goes blank after approx 10 mins and won't come back on - it just sits there blinking its evil yellow eye at me. Any suggestions peeps? robert - glasgow - Wed May 08 01:48 2002 reply
Sorry Robert, guess my advice never worked huh, only reason i mentioned it was because that was the problem with mine, One more suggestion though would be to take yr existing monitor to a friends house and test it on their computer just to be double sure it's nothing at all to do with yr monitor, Regarding the other thing, well, u got me stumped too!!!!!!!!! Sorry couldn't help any more mate!!! wesley brookes - middlesbrough - Wed May 08 16:14 2002 reply

Running XP/latest Win Media Player. In Media Guide, there are 2 search panels; 1st says:"Type your web search here". The 2nd says: "Look It Up". Problem is: this 2nd panel has disappeared when I now load Media Guide. I have checked the obvious settings (eg running in Full Mode) but can't see why this very useful function has now gone. Can anyone please help? steve - london - Tue May 07 14:57 2002 reply

Hello all, I am what you might call an inquisitive beginer that creates all his own problems, hope somebody can help!!! Firstly I seemd to have a problem with ie, I am running ME and using Aol (after a few mins in here I have worked out that AOL seems to cause alot of the problems) anyway, i for some reason stopped being able to access any websites either through the AOL browser or the ie one.I kept getting the unable to display message. So off I went on my crusade to fix it all, uninstalled and reinstalled everyting AOL, IE, ME all to no avail, then in frustration played about in the device manager and have caused a slighlty bigger problem, apparently I have done something to my graphics card that now makes my dektop look like it was created for 4 year olds, the device manager it told me that i/o is being used by something else, and now I am at a complete loss! any ideas (i am fully awre that the first idea would be to stop playing around but after that I am all ears!!! Lee Smith - Bristol - Fri May 03 16:26 2002 reply
Lee, first and foremost. please DON'T stop playing, you'll never learn anything and another thing, although frustrating, it's incredible fun and a huge sense of achievement actually fixing a problem. Now for the real job in hand which is to restore your graphics card. You don't say whether it is an onboard graphics card or an add on PCI or AGP card. My guess it is the latter.
You will need to get out the disc that came with the graphics card.
Now go back to Device Manager and remove it, by highlighting it (single click on the offending item) and click Remove. Reboot your computer. Insert the cd rom. As Windows loads, it should now find the display adapter. Let Windows do the rest.
Reboot your computer for a final time. Once it has restarted, Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Display Click the Settings tab, click Advanced. Check the Apply without Restarting, click apply Now reset your display to how you would like it Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri May 03 18:57 2002 reply
Thanks!! tried it and it worked a treat, I now have a grown ups desktop with real colours. As for the AOL/Internet access problem, I checked with some of the AOL message boards and found that I am not the only one with the same problem, seems like a rogue AOL update has upset quite a few people, the only way they have sorted it is to reformat the hard drive - sounds like fun!! so that is my next task, look out for further pleas for help! Thanks again! Lee Smith - Bristol - Tue May 07 17:01 2002 reply
Hi all, Can anyone help me!!!!!! I've just built a new computer based on the ASUS A7N266-VM motherboard with online lan\ethernet card, Although this has installed correctly under windows xp, i'm having trouble installing it onto windows 98 (i have both operating systems installed on seperate partitions on my hard drive) I've followed instructions carefully but to no avail. (I think the lan card is a Realtek 8201al) Thanx in advance. wesley brookes - middlesbrough - Thu May 02 17:33 2002 reply
Wesley, I'm assuming that you have WIN98 on the Primary partition for the dual boot, and that you have rebooted to WIN98. If it isn't being recognised in the current PCI slot, or you are having IRQ conflicts, I suggest that you try swapping it to a free PCI slot. My Windows Me keeps resetting and i have no idea why!!! I haven't installed anything new so It isn't caused by a new installation!!! Robert Lesauteur - Bristol - Thu May 02 15:42 2002 reply
Hi again! I posted a query on Wed 1st about a computer/monitor?? freeze. My system is new and so am I. It's got to the stage where if I want a cup of coffee I have to shut down in case the screen collapses and can't be restarted. Can the omniscient and omnipresent Iain give me any advice? Some friends have said the problem lies with the computer while others have put the blame on the monitor. Have I covered all the power management stuff correctly, or have I missed something? I've spoken to the monitor manufacturers and they've offered me a new one but I'm not confident that this will solve the problem 'cos my instincts tell me it's something to do with the system set-up. Can anyone help? Also, by pressing reset and going thru scandisc and blue screen am I definately risking damage to the hard drive? robert - glasgow - Thu May 02 10:40 2002 reply
Robert, can you confirm that you have your monitor and hard drive set to Turn off Never in Power Options? Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Thu May 02 19:49 2002 reply
Thanks Iain. At the risk of being overly complicated I have went into start>settings>control panel>power management. This gives me the choice of setting power schemes to "always on" (which I've chosen)and to set the system standby to "never" and to set turn off hard discs to "never". I have also enabled power management in the BIOS. As an alternative I have turned the power management to "off" in the BIOS although I don't think this is the correct way to go about the problem (it didn't fix it at any rate). Thanks again for your brain time. robert - glasgow - Thu May 02 23:24 2002 reply
I had the same problem, and i had my computer in pieces trying to find solution, in the end it turned out to be the monitor that wouldn't come out of standby, so i replaced it and it worked again. wesley brookes - middlesbrough - Thu May 02 16:55 2002 reply
Thanks a 1,000,000 Wesley. Suddenly I feel less like a complete idiot and if I don't get any more feedback over the next couple of days I'll be sending the monitor back to the manufacturers. I'm now feeling a lot better that I'll get a result of some kind. Thanks and Cheers. robert - glasgow - Thu May 02 22:59 2002 reply
Help please! I type by looking at the keyboard and not the screen. It is annoying when I look up to find I have typed in capital letters in error. How can I set up my PC to give a warning tone when I am typing in capitals? clive - Billingshurst - Thu May 02 09:02 2002 reply
Alternatively you could download First cap, (freeware) click downloads, download the english translation as well Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Fri May 03 08:13 2002 reply
Clive, go into Control Panel, Accessibility, Keyboard and click Toggle Keys at the bottom. It's not very loud on my computer but it does work. Maurice - Croydon - Thu May 02 16:07 2002 reply
I always do that, but if you're in MS Word etc you can highlight the offending text, go to the format menu and change case. If only I'd found that years ago! Mike - Warrington - Thu May 02 20:33 2002 reply
hI!. Help would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to transfer my tapes & LP's using Clean 3 to cd. Just a couple of questions. (1). When burning a CD does it have to be formatted first or does burning include formatting. (2)Windows sound recorder only runs for 60 secs why? and can it be set to record longer. (3). Tricky one this any tips on getting a optimal recording level on the sound card. All answers greatfully accepted thanks. Keith Taylor - Oldham - Thu May 02 08:44 2002 reply
Keith, I can answer question 1 but not the others. I have to format CD-RW's but, for some obscure reason, not CR-R's. I've also wasted quite a few CD-R's in my time but have never found out why. Some people say different brands have an effect. Hope this helps. Maurice - Croydon - Thu May 02 16:13 2002 reply
Hi Folks, I have 2 parts to this question...as explained in the modems section regarding WinXp not recognising my modem i have now obtained the updated driver from msi.com. secondly i am running Intervideo and for some reason WinXp keep on saying that my Colour enhancement is not set up properly - must be 1024x768 or greater. I have changed my display settings to every possible one but the error keeps on popping up. I have also obtained the updated driver for my VIA tech graphics display adapter. Can anyone tell me on how to input these new drivers and will my OS recognise my modem when i have installed them as well as the graphics. Could this be the same as the post i read regarding a new PCI graphics card. Thanks stuarty - Airdie - Wed May 01 13:45 2002 reply

Can anyone help?? If left unattended my monitor goes into some kind of standby mode with a flashing LED and a blank screen (computer stays active tho'). If I move the mouse the screen comes on again. That's OK. However if I leave it too long I cannot get the screen to become active again and have to press reset and get the blue screen and scandisk etc. I'm running Win 98 and the power management is enabled in BIOS and the windows power settings have been set to 'always on'. Any ideas before I wreck my drives? The monitor does have some kind of power saving feature but the manual doesn't tell you how to disable/reset it.Help!! robert - Glasgow - Wed May 01 11:06 2002 reply

You need to edit the registry for this one, I'm afraid. Go to Start | Run Type in Regedit In the left pane, find the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft \Windows\CurrentVersion
In the right pane, you should see RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization, double click on each of these to edit the string value
NoteOf you are using XP or Windows 2000, the Windows in the HKEY above will have WindowsNT, not Windows . Iain Wolstencroft - Accrington - Wed May 01 06:19 2002 reply

hi, have just aquired xp plus, but i cannot install all the screensavers as it comes up with the graphics has only 4mb when it requires 12mb.have looked to change it in the bios but with no luck, can anybody suggest anything?am running a time m/c 128ram,and have been told that my card is an on board card,if that is any help, thanx pete - london - Sun Apr 28 10:45 2002 reply
Just to pick up on the conversation and be the bearer of more bad news but have you checked to see if you have a AGP slot for this new graphics card? You will need to check your motherboard details.I think you will find that it will only have a spare PCI slot for a new card if you have on-board graphics which limits the choices. When looking for a new card remember to be careful when picking new card.Just bought GeForce2 Mx400 Twin View 64mb PCI for £60.www.ebuyer.com.Another 128mb of Ram would help if you running graphic intensive applications. Nick G - Portsmouth - Sun Apr 28 23:18 2002 reply
I hate to say this, Pete, but I think it may be time to upgrade your Graphics card, to at least 16Mb. Most "older" onboard graphics are limited to four and sometimes 8Mb. You should be able to pick up a 32Mb card from any computer fair or your local pc shop for as little as £25. Sorry to be the messenger of bad tidings (PS please don't shoot the messenger;)!) thanks iain, bit frustrating as the pc is only 15 months old! pete - london - Sun Apr 28 11:43 2002 reply
I fully understand Pete, but this wonderful world of computing doesn't stand still long enough to catch it's breath. Its hard enough trying to keep up with the older stuff, let alone the absorbing all the newer stuff. Still one day, they might run out of ideas. (or is that wishful thinking!)
