'Breakdown' Insurance V Repair Bills
      #391978 - Fri Apr 18 2008 03:34 PM

I have always steered clear of 'breakdown' insurance on PCs due to cost but recently I needed to get my out of warranty computer looked at and just 'looking' seems to cost around £70 inc vat.

Am I just looking in the wrong places?

I would expect a charge of around £45ish would be reasonable. Still if you'll pay it, they'll charge it!

Thanks Fusion unfortunately in my area they all seem to fall around £60 ex vat.
Next time I'll look further afield. That or learn how to do it myself

Looks like computer repair people in my area are getting worse than garages, especially when you consider the cost of a PC against a car.

Frustrating really that if a look then requires repair parts it could make it a better bet to skip the PC and buy another one.

I am regularly asked to 'look at' a computer that isn't working properly. In most cases it takes at least an hour to install and run diagnostic software and then understand what it's telling you. And that's before you actually start fixing it.

Let's assume you are on £50,000 per annum for a 40 hour week. You need to add 35% on top of that for pension, insurance and other requirements of a self employed person. That's around £32 an hour and you haven't actually costed in anything for a workshop, a vehicle, tools of the trade employees etc. etc. That also assumes the individual is working the full 40 hours. If he's only got jobs that last 20 hours that week, where does he get the rest of the money he needs to live on?

I know it sounds quite easy to get someone to 'look at' your PC but if it was that easy you would do it yourself. You clearly don't have the skills so you must pay for someone who does. Or teach yourself and then YOU could go and charge people £60 an hour to mend their computers.

You could assume I'm on £50,000 per annum for a 40 hour week but unfortunately you'd be overstating my salary considerably.

The rest of what you said made sense though.
