I am trying to fit a new PSU to my PC and getting nowhere at the moment. I have connected up all cables and connectors as per this article. I plugged the power cable in and I get nothing... no led light no fan whirring, no sounds whatsoever. Any ideas where I am going wrong? What should I look for? Thanks

That's a pretty good guide.
A couple of things to check:
1. Is there an on/off switch on the back of the OSU itself?
2. Is there an extra 4-pin connector that should also be connected to the motherboard, in addition to the larger 20-pin connector?

Thanks for your reply richie. Yes there is a switch at the back of the PSU, I made sure to switch it to "1" when turning it the unit on. I also noticed the 4 pin connector on the motherboard aswell as the 20 pin connector... it's the lead with the black and yellow wires and the 4 pin connector that goes in here.. right?

Yes, it's the yellow and black one. Some newer PSUs have the 24-pin connector that splits into 20 + a 4. Do not use the 4 pin that splits from that one.

Yeah thats what I thought, but it still did not power up. What about the small flat black connectors, they have 5 wires coming from them (orange, black, red, black and yellow) where are these supposed to connect to, as I cannot find a "home" for these!

Could be SATA from your description. Do they have a sort of L shape at the end? It's OK to leave some free.
Is the switch on the back set to 220-240V? If it's the lower 110V it may have blown by the extra power.
Check the plug and fuse. Try a different cable.
If still no joy, it could be faulty.

Don't know if it helps, but my PSU comes out with a 20 pin and a 4 pin plug on the same cable,, but split at the end as though they look like they could go separate.
In fact they go side by side on my mobo into the 24 pin power socket.
I was frantic to find somewhere for the 4 pin plug till a friend told me that.

Richie, none of the SATA cables are plugged in at all at the moment, I can't find where to put them. There are about 3 of those type.
Nerval, thanks for your help. I have a 20 pin connector and another 4 pin connection elsewhere on the motherboard, I have these cables in place now. Thanks

I'm going to check the cable, try another one. But I beleive there is "something" there as when I switch the PSU back to "0" I get a small high pitched squeek noise as if there is some power somewhere!

If you don't have SATA hard drives, you don't need to connect the SATA power connectors. Just leave them hanging loose, but make sure they don't obstruct the processor fan.

OK, i don't have a sata hard drive so I have left those cables free. I have tried another power cable but still no luck. I may buy a new PSU to see if that works, but i have a suspicion the motherboard might be knackered!

Was that why you bought a PSU in the first place?

Kind of... one day the PC wouldn't power up. When I opened the casing one of the PSU wires was fried and stuck to the circuit board a bit.See pic
There is no visual eveidence of damage to the motherboard, but I suppose it doesn't mean there isn't.

Some of the connectors on the motherboard are so tiny you wouldn't be able to tel with the naked eye.
