sorry if this is the wrong forum, looking at either Advent 9215 or 9315
I like the 9315 as it has higher mhz and 2mb cache, but the 9215 has built in webcam, which spec is best?:

Are you adamant that you need to buy Advent? That suggests PCWorld is your preferred supplier and there are better choices available.

Not necessarily, just seemed the cheapest at that spec, all suggestions gratefully received! (£450 mark is maximum) first came across Advent on Currys website

Same company, different set of salesmen. The real problem with the Advent brand is the fact that you can never get driver or software updates for them short of taking the PC back to the shop and paying for the privilege.
How about this for a bit of competition? Has the advantage of being a well know brand (Lenovo ex IBM) with plenty of online support. It is a step up from the old IBM Thinkpads which were built to withstand some rough handling by professionals on the move.
What do you intend to use the machine for?

For home and small business use (desktop publishing type stuff really).
As don't intend to replace for a while trying to see what the best for my low budget is. I may be misguided in my assumption that core 2 processor and higher cache, GHz, MHz and memory is better?

What 'brands' should I be looking at? Are Acer any good? Can only find expensive Toshibas at the mo with similar above spec

Acer are quite good. The one Greysts links to is excellent value. Lenovo are a decent brand that not a lot of people have heard of.

My missus has started a college course and is badgering me for a laptop. I had a look at Mesh and notice they have this one:

She really wants it for her course - so no need for games etc or a definate need for internet use (use the desktop for that).
Seems like a decent buy for the money, but as I always value the opinions on here, does anyone have any comments on it, including about Mesh?

Various driver updates for things like graphics, sound, wireless etc. Software upgrades for the programmes that come with the laptop. In other words, you don't get any support from anywhere once you've bought your machine.

Does it matter that I probably wouldn't use their software anyway? (or is it a case that you have too?) my desktop is about 6 years old and I've never upgraded anything!

I'm a firm believer in the old adage, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but there is also a case to be made for upgrading your drivers on a regular basis because sometime the manufacturers find bugs or improvements. Unless you get them you won't know if something better is available. If you've been visiting the Microsoft Update site regularly (as you should anyway) then you may well have been getting driver updates already.
