BOTH DVD drives completely disappeared!! Help!
      #266438 - Thu Mar 09 2006 05:35 PM

I have a disc in one, that appeared to make My Computer freeze. Then the drive stopped showing. Now my other one has too. How do I get them back? i can open one (the empty one) but I'm a bit stuck.

If only one of the drives opens, it may have lost power. Try opening up the computer via the side panel and making sure all the connections to the drives are secure.

The other possibility is that one of the drives has malfunctioned (read: broke) and it's stopping the other from working.

Right well one is working again and i can mysteriously see both drives. however one drive stubbornly refuses to read ANY discs and I think this may be broken or dirty. If its broken how do I fix it (or do I buy another one) and how do you clean dvd drives?

I have just asked the two IT guys in my office about how to clean my DVD drives (they also burn dvds as well as play them, although not any more as they've stopped working) which i believe may be filthy.

One has said try a dvd lens cleaner.

The other has said avoid a dvd lens cleaner at all cost and put a vacuum cleaner on 'blow' (my dyson doesn't do this) and blow all the dust out.

Before I bang their heads together, what do you do?

Try a can of compressed air. Should be able to get one from Maplin or PC World.

Sorry, I'm getting all muddled with the threads, posted somewhere else when i couldn't see this one! The drive has disappeared again after making a brief magical appearance. I think I will have to accept its broken. And it has a disc stuck in it. Is it a case of replacing it now or can I do anything to repair it?

Thanks!
Jo

Thbey're not worth the hassle to try to repair if they don't work. Have a look here

The LG at the top is an excellent buy. It's a case of unscrewing the old one, sliding it out ad removing the wires. Check the jumper settings and set the new one the same, connect the wires and fix it in. When you restart Windows will recognise and install the new hardware.

To get the disk out of the broken one, straighten out a paper clip and push it firmly into the small hole on the front.
