How old is the drive? I've had a few drives fail on me like this in the past after about the one year mark. We should go through the motions to make sure it is a hardware fault first.
1. You say it isn't recognising CDs, but what happens when you insert one and try to open it under My Computer? 2. Try a few different discs and see if you get different results 3. Try the discs in a different drive or another computer to confirm they work fine 4. Re-install the drivers for the drive. This can be done via Start > Control Panel > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager. Just find the entry for the drive, right click it and hit uninstall. The drivers will be reinstalled when you restart the computer. 5. Check the manufacturers website for any firmware upgrades to the drive. 6. Lastly, remove the drive from the computer and see if the same symptoms occur when it is installed into a different computer.
If none of these steps give any improvement, it is likely that it is indeed a hardware fault and the drive will have to be replaced.
