Taskbar keeps freezing
      #392899 - Mon Apr 28 2008 12:36 AM

I hope someone can help.

My taskbar keeps freezing. I've reinstalled XP and the Vista upgrade and deliberately not installed Vista updates because thought it was that that was doing it but it wasn't.

Prevously Vista was fine for the year I had it, it's only recently.

The only things installed at the mo are AOL Vista Ready and Kaspersky Security 7.0.

What are the symptoms of your taskbar freeze, i.e. how do you know it's the taskbar that's freezing, not the mouse?

Hi, clicking on the start button plus any documents in it doesn't do anything. Plus when it boots up the items on the main screen don't do anything.

Both require having to do ctrl alt del all the time and they're fine for a couple of minutes or so.

Have gone through I.E. instead of AOL and it still freezes and have turned off Kaspersky Internet Security and just left the Win firewall on but it still does it.

Thought it might have been a virus when it was doing it on the year-old Vista pre-reinstall but having done a full hard drive delete and reinstalled it could it be something else?

Thanks,

Do your words ([italics]having done a full hard drive delete[/italics]) mean that the last install was Vista only or was it XP followed by a Vista upgrade?

If it was Vista only:
1. Run the System File Checker (SFC) from an elevated Command Prompt, i.e. click the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and you may have to put the Vista DVD in the drive.
2. Run a Vista startup repair. This can repair a lot of problems http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/91467-startup-repair.html

If it was XP followed by an upgrade:
3. Was the XP version, SP2?
4. Did you run the Vista Upgrade Advisor before installing Vista?

Finally, I wouldn’t rule out an infection!
