Hi, Lately when I've tried to play MPGs or MP3s on Windows Media Player, a message comes up on the lower left saying that the program is connecting to or looking for codec servers. This goes on for a minute or so, and then a message saying that there has been an error. MP3s don't play; MPEGs play, but with no sound.
Trying to play WMV or WMA files results in an error saying that they are not supported.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Jake

The mpeg situation is easy to resolve. Download a piece of software called GSpot.
Run this and then open your video files with GSpot. This will then tell you which codecs you need to play the video properly.
I dont know why your MP3 wont play and media player whould handles these easily wihtout any additional codecs, unless it is not a proper MP3 ?
Have you checked for any updates ?

This didn't really help. Everything used to work, and the MP3s are proper MP3s. Any other ideas?

Download the most up to date windows media player (10) and this will reset the player. Likely that some files have been deleted or become corrupt. i had the same problem, couldnt play anything dvd, mpeg, mp3, wma, etc. reinstalled windows media player and worked fine worth a try, hope this helps

Hi,
I downloaded v. 10, but when I try to install the .exe file I get error messages -- that it isn't compatible with my version of Windows (I got the right one for my system) or that something could not be located.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately, I believe WMP v10 is XP only.

Saw your post and I am having similar issues - do I need to unistall WMP first, or will installing v10 take care of that?
Thanks.

There are various types of compression used to reduce the file size of movies, eg Divx, Xvid, both avis. If you want to watch these on a standard DVD player you need to convert them to mpeg2 for DVD. To watch them on media player you need to have the right codecs installed.

Thanks for the PM. I'll reply here for others to see.
Try using VSO Divx to DVD to convert avi's to DVD.
There are other free encoders around. I've found DIKO to be the most reliable, apart from the above.
If you're not sure about what codecs you need, use Gspot, as mentioned in another post in this thread.
