Playing videos with mediaplayer/realplayer

Did a full system reboot yesterday, since then when I click on short videos in the 'My Pictures' section I get the sound but not the picture of the video. What am I doing wrong ?

After a bit of googling for clues I have downloaded something called Xvid. Hey presto we're back in business

Any ideas why this was necessary ? everything worked fine before the reboot
