I know it should be easy but how do you record a sound file in XP?
I want to copy a conversation from the radio onto my PC using a microphone near the radio speaker. Any Ideas?

Is the radio station not available online? Do you have recording/WAV/MP3 software?

I recorded the talk from my music centre onto a cassette tape. I now wish to transfer the talk from the cassette tape via a microphone onto my PC I have a microphone which I can plug into my PC Don't know how to transfer Somebody else suggested opening Sound recorder which I can do ,but still have this wee issue of How to get the clip stored on the hard drive 
Ps I have NO sound card installed (Integrated sound chip) if that is of any help

If you have no sound card at all then you're stumped. One would be needed for input.

Thanks for trying. I will fit a SoundBlaster Audigy
card which I fitted to another computer a few months ago (Borrow it for this 1 off job)
Can you run through the procedure, with the card fitted. I think I'll be Ok from there Cheers 
The purpose of this exercise is to make an MP3 file to go in an Email
If no joy I will then have to risk sending the tape via post and its unknown if the person at the other end has a cassette player

Whether or not your tape deck has audio out terminals (or possibly a headphones socket) will determine how you proceed.

I know what you mean, they used to fit Phono sockets on the earliest cards but they seen to have disappeared on the latest Versions 
Not got the card yet. I know its an old fashioned interface software-wise but forget what sockets it comes with.
Have phono sockets on Music centre Thats the good news Now Suppose the Sound card has these sockets too ,is it a case of plugging Red to Red Black/Black White/White...? Then what?

I am answering My own question here, and have found a page which answers all my questions, and will help others out of this spot
Was basically looking for Phono socket layouts on a Soundblaster card and this was on the 1st page of results

If the sound card only has mini-jack sockets you may have to invest in a lead with phono/RCA on one end and a mini-jack on t'other, like this;
Shop around, prices vary from £3-30 or more.
Anyhoo; once connected you need to set up the recording levels by opening the volume control on the PC and checking the right input has been selected in the 'record' section, and adjust the slider accordingly.
Likewise with the music centre adjust the output volume. Then do a couple of test recordings to see how it sounds. Once you've balanced the levels off you go.
The only reservation I have is using the Windows sound recorder, I can't recall but I think it has a limited record time.

use headphone socket to line in with sterio jack to sterio jack from player to computer and down load a free prog called audacity and use this for recording
you will not hear the volume when recording but I set it to 6 when recording and this is ok for me sterio jack apprx 3.99 at cheap shops
