Problems exiting AOL

Hi, this is my first post and I am not a tech-head so please be gentle.

Now I use Aol90.VR. Problem is that everytime I click on 'Exit Aol' my computer restarts itself with no prompting or error message whatsoever. I've tried loads of things - updating the driver, reinstalling the software, reconfiguring the modem and the access numbers, system restore, reinstalling IE7, I've run spyware and virus scans - but nothing has worked. I'm on Windows XP on Packard Bell and I'm at the end of my bloody tether as surely all this rebooting is not doing my PC any good.

Has anyone encountered this problem and is it fixable? Please help as I am THIS close to throwing the damn machine out the window!

Hi Bob
The answer is you have the Auto start switched on ...I Install the AOL program frequently and make sure this is turned Off
(The AOL Companion is useless too)
So let's kill the 2 birds with 1 stone OK?
1 ) Find the Square AOL Connection by the Clock click on it to bring up a menu
2) Find Auto start Options... click on this
3) Next window Change the Setting to Don't use Auto start options and untick the AOL Companion tick box as well
4) Press OK to Save the setting (and close the box)

How's that? Time to do job seconds
Only way I have a restart is if the connection goes down (I think is only with Broadband this works?)On the Autofix Wizard list (separate download) Go to Key word AUTOFIX The Computer Checkup Program is also very helpful Download link is on the same page

Ah, the problem is I can't seem to bring up the square AOL icon by the clock. All I have is the triangle one and it's not giving me the options you mentioned when I click on it.

Try this click on the Start button to bring up the start menu

Next find the "run" box and open that copy this word into that box Msconfig

Window will open and there are several tabs on the Top click on the one called Startup (on the far Rightside0

There is a list in the Window now scan down it and tell us if both AOLDial is there? Top of the list and AOL 9.0 Tray Icon is also present (near the bottom)?
Is either Unticked? If the answer is yes then tick the box then press the Apply button then the Ok button to save and exit

If no joy get your AOL 9.0 disk out and install again but do Not delete the older versions if asked (do it later when the issue is fixed)
Sign on as a "current member" and fingers crossed both the Icons will appear (the Square icon is the Older version)
Next do a Restart .Has both the Icons appeared?
Then proceed as in the earlier posting
If this does not work some how you will have to get hold of an older version of a AOL 9 promotion Disk the preinstalled versions are usless! I delete them and Install again using any AOL9 Disk from my spares and It works first time



Another method is to uninstall AOL altogeter (in the Control Panel and have you disk to hand if it offers to save you file say "Yes" then reinstall and the file are installed on the new ""install "

But the Big question is did it generate a square or triangle (connection link? (or both?)
And Do note there are a couple of automatic connectivity updates loaded as you sign off
after installing ,unknown if you shut down your computer suddenly, when you have finished surfing the link was here? Do pause for 10 seconds to see if there is any activity? 1st shutdown only
If you have the Autofix service ( AOL one click fixes on the start Menu)enabled locate this one on the list and Press the "fix it for me" button agaist it to start the wizard

Hello,
I have exactly the same problem. Same make of PC, Packard Bell and AOL 9.0 VR. Did you manage to find a fix for this ?

Additional info If the Square Icon is not appearing (happened to me ) and you can only make it reappear after a reinstall!

Unfortunately the Auto Reconnect Options are lost if the square box is removed No Keyword or Way Into any settings But The service Is reliable and drops out about Once or twice a year normally for scheduled Maintenance (late night)

So in real time Terms Outages due to 3rd parties is the Only thing you'll experience If your reconnect message come up Then all is good The auto-start is a Fast Log on as soon as your computer starts ...A Right pain! (I advise disable it first thing after installing AOL.(On the Square icon Menu) Its like a bad Pop Up!

Got it !
To enable/ disable the Auto reconnection Right Click the Triangle Icon then Go Connectivity > Connect options> Advanced Broadband Settings>Continue> and check that the ReConnect Me... Box (top one) is ticked on the next page. Better of the 2 choices
