I see from the lastest issue of WebUser that V21 is offering unlimited 512kbs ADSL for £10 a month. Although not real broadband, this offer is tempting enough for me to get landline so that I can get ADSL.
Has anybody here used V21? I've looked at ADSLGuide, but can't find any details about V21?

512 was real broadband last time I looked , with most ISPs metering your bandwidth, this looks a good deal, and I wouldn't judge the mixed reviews, just hunt around a bit more

Thanks for the links. A total of £20/month sounds like the cheapest that I can get unmetered ADSL for, let's hope it lasts.
Only in this country, can ISPs get away with calling 512kbps "broadband". If you talk to any communications engineer, anything from 512kps up to 2Mbps is called "midband" - a service needs to be 2Mbps or over to be called "broadband".
We've just been conned by all the advertising.

It's still better than being on dial-up for those of us who are lucky enough to be able to have broadband

As somebody high up in BT has been quoted as saying about 512kbs - "Faster than dial-up, it is. Broadband it ain't".
I see the sneeky 7 quid price increase now - £26.98 a month sounds less tempting. I think I'll stick with what I've got.
www.ukonline.net seems to do a real £10/month 512kbs, but I live in the wrong part of Slough to get it.

I can't get Broadband because my exchange hasn't been enabled yet. It should be on 27th July. I'm quite a long way from the exchange, so I don't what speed of BB connection I'd be able to get. That's one of the downsides of living in a rural area. It's a miracle that I can get on-line at all! Madeline.

Try http://www.streetmap.co.uk put your post code in and zoom the map to a good size to view streets. Hit the "large map" text and note there is a scale at the bottom. (in 500m's ) I measured my distance in a straight line and it was approx 1000m = roughly .6 of a mile. If i had to guess it i would have said about 2 miles so maybe you are not as far away as you think Worth a play if nothing else

Don't forget that BT don't measure the distance from home to exchange in straight lines. The majority of t/p cables follow the street line so will go round numerous corners. On top of that there will various joins in the cable, street corner boxes and telegraph poles all of which add to the potential signal loss. Just because you are within 3 miles (or whatever) as the crow flies doesn't mean you can automatically get BB.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really? Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Good point but I'm trying to say that i thought i was approx 2 miles from the exchange in a straight line and I'm actually only .6 of a mile away. Mads might be a lot closer than she thinks.

That's what bothers me. We're probably not too far from the exchange as the crow flies, but it's all long, winding country lanes round here, it probably means that we're too far away to get a BB connection when the exchange is enabled. All the same, I live in hope... Madeline.

you might get a pleasant surprise as from my house following the roads to the exchange its about 1 and a 1/2 miles (not far i know) and my 512k connection actually connects at 576k either way i wish you well when your exchange gets done.

Thanks, I hope I can get a BB connection when the exchange is enabled. If not, dial-up's better than nothing! Madeline.

Hi Rob, The latest on V21 is that they are doing 512 for £12.50 per month giving unlimited bandwidth over 60 hours (Per month). This is a permanant deal and not just an introductory offer as far as I'm aware. But you will need to spend in the region of £30.00 for the modem and £60.00 for activation.
As a long term customer (three years approx) I can vouch for their reliability as a company and I've been on dial up at £10.00 monthly giving 42 hours PER WEEK which has always been enough for me. The price has not gone up in all that time and on the rare occassion I've needed Customer help they have always been very quick, helpful and reliable but I'm not thinking of taking up this offer. I'm sure there will better deals if you hunt around at the £15.000 monthly region.
Hope it helps, Regards, Steve. Ps: I'm reasonably happy with On Speed at about £2.00 per month but it is NOT the same.

Rob some months back you were praising the Wireless Broadband available in your part of Slough, what's changed your mind to start looking at other options?

Wireless broadband (£18/month for 512kbs) was the way forward about a year ago when unlimited 512kbs ADSL cost £25/month (=£35/month including BT line rental).
Now that unlimited 2Mbps ADSL is available for £15/month (=£25/month including BT line rental), I reckon that the extra £7/month for a much faster connection is worth it.
