Hi Can anyon help with this frustrating problem.
Just bought my mum a new computer. She's still using dial up.
The connection box obviously provides for a user account and password and there's a tick box for saving these. However, each time she re-connects the password is missing and needs inserting. I'm sure on her old pc this was saved and didn't require manual inputting.
Can't seem to find how to overcome this. Can anyone help please. Ta

Are you sure it's not there? Depending on the way you are conecting, it sometimes says in the box click here to change the saved password but you just click Connect and it goes through OK.

OK OK I can't go any faster! aaaaaaaaaaaagh!

This is a register edit solution, possibly the only solution, so do it for her and back it up 1st.

That's what happens with mine. I've never had to re-enter the password. I've had a look at "Properties" for my connection and on the Security tab, it says "Allow unsecured password". Would that be relevant in this case?

Quite so! It not only helps others who might have the same problem, but also it's nice to know if you've helped (or not).

Hi,
I have a friend with the exact same problem. He suddenly found that he could no longer save his dial-up password. I had a look at the link provided by Petersmyth1 and saw that it applies to Windows 98 and Windows 2000. My mate is running Windows XP SP2 and I wondered if anyone knows if the Micro$oft fix mentioned in the link will work with Win XP.
I have had a look in my registry and the two keys mentioned in the Micro$oft article don't exist. I wonder if this is the case generally with XP or whether it is a quirk of my very quirky machine. Anyone know if it applies to XP?
If his registry has these two keys, presumably it won't cause irretrievable damage if the two words mentioned in the article are added in the appropriate places? HELP!

Those registry fixes will not work in XP because password control in XP is entirely different from Win 98 or 2000.

Thanks Spencer. All I can say is Gawd save us from Shuttles! Is there any way round the problem?

Have a look at this. It is the converse of what you want to do but you might want to try an experiment. Enter the new key in the registry as described with a value of 1 and then reboot the PC. That will stop the Save Password dialogue. Then use regedit again but this time give it a value of zero and reboot. See if that fixes it.
You also might want to verify that the client for Microsoft Networks is installed by right clicking on dial-up networking and clicking properties. Within properties, click the network tab and ensure that Client for Microsoft Networks is installed and selected.

Many thanks, Spencer, I am in France at the moment but have had a look at the link you have given and will give it a try when I am in the UK. I can't see that it would do any harm. If it does, it might even get that Shuttle put into the nearest skip!
