I aim to upgrade today
      #379938 - Tue Jan 15 2008 10:23 AM

Please feel free to move this elsewhere if it's in the wrong section.

I am using a trusty old SE K7501 model, brought back into use after I'd upgraded to Motorola Razr and couldn't get on with it. However my contract is now up and today I aim to upgrade again.

The model I'm after through vodaphone is one my daughter has, SE K850i (orange) which was launched Feb/07. But my V shop tells me that this particular model was not available through them, they have the SE K800i which is as good (they say).

My research shows me that the K800i came out in 2006 and only lacks the distortion feature in the camera software. You may know different, if so you might like to tell me.

Ideally the model I choose, will be free with an extended contract which is only about £20/£23 per month. It will have a large'ish screen (like K810i) and have a 3+ million pixel camera. Whilst I would like to use SE, I'm prepared to consider anything else. Would anyone care to recommend anything please?.

I meant she has the K810i, not the 850i

I would be interested also, as i'm in exactly the same position, except i want to change from PAYG to contract. I love my SE K750i and have heard the K850i is a bit tricky to get used to due to small fiddly keypad and touch sens menu buttons. I would probably find K800 or K810i easier to use, but as they are already older models tempted to go for the 850i especially for the 5mp camera. Why change S/E? with one of the best camera phones around, why go messing with the keypad?

My head is swimming with information having googled and read users reports all morning.

The K800i Julu 2006 3.2mp..../ K810i Feb 2007 3.2mp.../K8501 Oct 2007, 5mp

I think the later model where some keys are touch/hover sensitive, might be too much for me. They are used to access the menus it seems. It has also done away with one row of key pads. The screen is slightly smaller than the model I prefer (K810i)

If you were to go for the 850i, via vodaphone, I think they said it would be £29. for that you would have a contract YOU dictate what you want. When you think you've screwed 'em enough, ask for "stop the clock". This is something whereby after 7pm and w/ends, you can talk for one hour but it only uses three of your allocated minutes. My monthly charge is about £20/£23. For that I get 120 x bet mins and a few hundred texts. Anything unused is rolled over.

The thing is, Vodaphone dont do the K810i. They say the K800i is about the same, but it is a year older, so that makes it a two yr old model.

I think I'm in a bargaining position. If I go to Orange, they have the 810i free and I could ask them to match Vodophones tarif.

I'm still unsure, keep us posted what you do.

Sorted. I decided to call in Phones4u, told them I was eager to get a K810i, they told me I might be unlucky as they're now rare. They could get me a previous model, k800i which is very much the same. I asked why they brought out the K810 if it wasn't much improved and was told SE held back because they new they'd be bringing out the K850i.

I told them that Vodaphone offered me this, and would charge me £29 for it. Phones4u said I could have it free and they would simply extend my contract.

My concern about the sensor keypads, was as Alec says, controlled by one locking key. So I've got this as yet unpacked phone and hopefully it will be fine.
