2G mobile internet- is it worth it?

I am moving to an area that is not covered by 3G services. The coverage maps on the mobile websites show 2G coverage only (38kbps peak data rate) Is it worth going ahead and getting the USB modem? How slow will my connection be? Equivalent to dail up? I am planning to use it mostly for msn and web surfing etc. What are my alternatives?
